If you are planning a hotel stay in Biên Hòa, you can also get to know the destination through its cultural history. The commune brings together temples with a long history of construction, memorial sites and cultural institutions amid a landscape of bodies of water and rocky islands. These varied highlights give your trip planning a clear focus: you might be interested in religious architecture, historical events or traditions. Local conditions apply when visiting individual sites; for Chùa Ông and Nhà lao Tân Hiệp, it is advisable to check current access arrangements in advance.
Temples and Historic Architecture
Chùa Long Thiền was built in 1664 and is considered one of the three oldest temples in Đồng Nai. Inside are numerous old bronze and wooden statues, as well as antique horizontal plaques and couplets with Buddhist and humanist themes. Its location is also part of its character: the Đồng Nai River lies in front of the temple, and Châu Thới Mountain rises behind it. Its history, furnishings and setting offer different points of interest for visitors.
Chùa Đại Giác dates to 1665 and is also known as Đại Giác cổ tự, Chùa Phật lớn and Chùa Tượng. The temple covers 3,000 square meters and comprises three connected rows of crosswise buildings. Inside is a 2.25-meter-tall wooden statue of Amitābha. Chùa Đại Giác is considered a representative cultural monument illustrating the development of the Biên Hòa–Đồng Nai area. The building’s layout and the statue’s dimensions provide concrete architectural points of interest for visitors.
Chùa Ông was built in 1684 and is considered the earliest Hoa temple built in Nam Bộ. It was designated a national historical and cultural monument in 2001. Visitors can view its architecture, stone and wood carvings, reliefs, and finely crafted ceramic figures with folk-art motifs. Those worshipped in the temple include Quan Công, Châu Xương, Quan Bình, Bà Thiên Hậu, Kim Huệ thánh mẫu, Mẹ Độ, Mẹ Sanh and Quan Âm Bồ Tát. Chùa Ông is open for sightseeing and worship; check the current visiting conditions in advance.
Memorial Sites and Historical Context
Nhà lao Tân Hiệp was designated a national historical and cultural monument on October 15, 1994, under Decision No. 2754/QĐ-BT. On December 2, 1956, a prison uprising led to the release of 462 cadres and party members, including numerous patriotic figures. Restoration and development of the complex began in 2011; it reopened in 2016 to mark the 60th anniversary of the uprising. The areas presented to visitors include an exhibition house and former prison areas: the weapons store, soldiers’ sleeping quarters, a section of the prison foundations and the prison gate.
Thành cổ Biên Hòa also offers a gateway to the history of the commune. It is a destination for sightseeing, historical research and educational excursions focused on passing on traditions, particularly to younger generations. Following several restorations, it retains its distinctive architecture and offers an airy, spacious setting. The Tân Lại archaeological site is located at Đình Tân Lại. Three large rectangular stones were found there and provisionally identified as parts of ancient temple and tower architecture from the Óc-Eo period (1st–7th centuries) and the subsequent Óc-Eo period (8th–12th centuries). This provisional identification makes clear that it is an archaeological interpretation.
Traditions and Cultural Visits
The festival at Chùa Ông takes place every year from the 10th to the 13th day of the first lunar month. The program includes a ceremony for Quan Thánh Đế Quân, a procession, and lion and dragon dances. As the festival dates follow the lunar calendar, the calendar date is important for planning. This allows you to coordinate a potential visit with the annual festival events.
Văn miếu Trấn Biên is designed in the style of traditional Vietnamese literary temple architecture and combines spiritual elements with the natural landscape. As a cultural and educational center, it regularly hosts ceremonies honoring high-achieving students, báo công ceremonies, incense offerings and programs for passing on traditions. At Đình Tân Lân, the imposing building is marked by architecture strongly influenced by Chinese culture. A traditional ceremony is held there every year on the death anniversary, attracting visitors from the surrounding area. Check the exact date locally.
Bodies of Water and Excursion Destinations
The Bửu-Long tourism complex includes small rocky islands among bodies of water spanning several dozen hectares. It is considered a day-trip destination for independent travelers from Đồng Nai and southeastern Vietnam. Chùa Bửu Phong in Biên Hòa is also considered an excursion destination for visitors from the province and beyond. Along with the river and mountain scenery at Chùa Long Thiền, these places show that cultural interests in Biên Hòa are not limited to buildings: the landscape is another of the different themes you can take into account when planning your stay.
