Pleiku City offers a range of cultural landmarks for a trip: Minh Thanh Pagoda is set in hilly countryside outside the city center, while Đại Đoàn Kết Square is in the center. Other highlights include the history of Nhà lao Pleiku and visitor experiences in Plei Ốp. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in the city, these themes can help you decide what to focus on.

Minh Thanh Pagoda

Minh Thanh Pagoda was built in 1964. It is located outside the city center in hilly countryside. Its gold-painted tower is 72 meters high. The pagoda has a four-ton incense burner and a large lotus pond. It houses more than 3,000 statues.

Nhà lao Pleiku: History and Location

In the center of Pleiku, Nhà lao Pleiku prison stands on a high red-earth mound on Thống Nhất Street in the Diên Hồng ward. The French built it in 1925; in 1994, it was recognized as a national historical and cultural monument of Vietnam. The two dates are 69 years apart; they mark the difference between the prison's construction and its later recognition as a national monument. The landmarks differ: the pagoda is characterized by its hilly setting outside the center, while Nhà lao Pleiku is identified by the red-earth mound, Thống Nhất Street, and Diên Hồng ward.

Monuments at Đại Đoàn Kết Square

Đại Đoàn Kết Square is in the center of Pleiku. Its expansive, tree-filled surroundings are used for gatherings and leisure activities. The square is also home to several monumental works. The Hồ Chí Minh statue is 10.8 meters high and weighs 16 tons. The bronze gong ensemble comprises eleven gongs; the largest weighs 700 kilograms. The ensemble was recognized as the largest bronze gong ensemble in Vietnam's Central Highlands. The Đại Đoàn Kết stone monument also stands in the square: 54 stone pillars, assembled into a large mountain, symbolize Vietnam's 54 ethnic groups. Another memorial is the 102-ton Thạch Thư. Engraved on it is Hồ Chí Minh's 1946 letter to the Congress of Southern Vietnam's ethnic minorities.

The monumental works have different emphases: the gong ensemble is distinguished by its regional recognition, the stone monument by its symbolism of the 54 groups, and the Thạch Thư by its historical inscription. A December 2024 article reports that the city regularly organized gatherings at the square for visitors, featuring gong music and Xoang dance; a gong group performed on request.

Cultural Experiences in Plei Ốp

Plei Ốp is a cultural tourism village in Pleiku associated with community-based tourism. Visitors can experience gong and Xoang performances connected with Jrai cultural identity. They can also sample local dishes and drink Rượu cần, a traditional rice wine consumed through drinking straws from a vessel. At Đại Đoàn Kết Square, monuments are combined with the square's use as a gathering place and for leisure; in Plei Ốp, cultural performances and local food take center stage.
