Phu Quoc: Coast, Culture and Island Nature
Accommodation in Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc brings together coastal landscapes, cultural sites and nature experiences in the island’s interior. When planning your hotel stay, it helps to consider the geography: some destinations are near Dương Đông, others are in Dương Tơ commune or elsewhere on the island. This can help you prioritize the places and experiences that matter for your trip.
Coast and Nature in Phu Quoc
The coastline of Phú Quốc is 150 kilometers long, with calm waves and clear emerald-green water. Phú Quốc is considered Vietnam’s best-known destination for water sports. Bãi Trường stretches for 20 kilometers and offers views of the sunset. Bãi Kem offers a different atmosphere: fine white sand, clear water and a peaceful setting define the beach, where visitors can swim.
The Phú Quốc National Park lies elsewhere on the island. It covers more than 31,422 hectares of primary forest and is home to 1,164 plant species and 381 animal species. Visitors can choose trekking routes from 2 to 8 kilometers through pristine tropical forest ecosystems. Conditions on the trails can vary. Coastal experiences and forest trails therefore offer different options for planning your trip.
Cultural and Religious Sites
In nearby Dương Đông, Dinh Cậu sits on a natural rocky outcrop that extends into the sea. Rugged rocks and shade-giving trees characterize the surroundings. This spiritual site has historical and cultural significance. Its construction is traditionally dated to around the 17th century, when the first residents settled on Phú Quốc. The Dinh Cậu Festival is held annually on the 15th day of the tenth lunar month at Dinh Cậu on Nguyễn Trung Trực Street. As the date follows the lunar calendar, check it when planning your trip.
The Buddhist Sùng Hưng Pagoda is also in nearby Dương Đông. Visitors can light incense, pray and learn about Buddhist culture there. In the neighboring commune of Dương Tơ, Hộ Quốc Pagoda offers a different setting: visitors can pray, find peace and take in the surrounding mountains and sea.
Another annual event in the surrounding area is the Thủy Long Thánh Mẫu Festival at Dinh Bà. It takes place on the 18th day of the first lunar month. The program includes incense offerings and prayers for favorable weather, good harvests and peace, as well as a procession, lion dance and other traditional folk activities. Festival details can vary from year to year.
Markets, Cuisine and Crafts
The Phú Quốc Night Market is in the center of Dương Đông and is an evening destination for local specialties, especially seafood. The market offers dishes including Bún Quậy, Bún Kèn and a variety of seafood. You can buy seafood there and have it prepared; fresh and dried products are also suitable as gifts. Individual vendors and menus may change. You can also find souvenirs at the night market.
In Dương Tơ commune, visitors can tour a pearl farm, learn about the cultivation process and buy pearls as souvenirs. Since this is a specific visitor offering, it is advisable to check in advance whether visits are currently available. On the island, traditional Phú Quốc fish sauce producers offer an insight into anchovy fermentation and the production process; you can buy their products as souvenirs.
Elsewhere on the island, the traditional fishing village of Hàm Ninh offers a glimpse of local daily life. Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood at a floating restaurant. A visit to the village therefore complements market dishes with a different dining setting.
Excursions and Island Routes
The smaller islands around Phú Quốc are mainly reached by boat. You can rent a private boat or book tickets and package tours through travel companies. Diving tours are available around the small islands of the An Thới Archipelago, where you can see colorful coral reefs and a rich variety of marine life. Boat trips and diving therefore lead to landscapes different from those found along the trails in the national park.
Motorbike tours on Phú Quốc follow small roads to local fishing villages and less-visited, nature-rich places. When considering a specific hotel, check its stated location and compare it with the places you want to visit.
