Kon Tum combines striking buildings with a cityscape shaped by river and plain. The wooden church, seminary and historic memorial sites each offer a different perspective. Cultural destinations elsewhere in the city’s administrative area also add to the picture. If you’re looking for a hotel in Kon Tum, these themes can help you plan your trip around the interests that matter most to you.

A city on the Đắk Bla

The city of Kon Tum lies on the banks of the Đắk Bla, a tributary of the Pơ Kô, on a small plain at an elevation of 525 metres. The river and plain give the city a clear geographical setting. The Kon Klor Suspension Bridge, which spans the Đắk Bla, is also a landmark in the cityscape and a visitor destination within Kon Tum’s administrative area.

Wooden church and seminary

Kon Tum’s wooden church is located on Nguyễn-Huệ Street and was completed entirely in wood in 1918. Its architecture combines the Romanesque style with the stilt-house architecture of the Ba Na. Two distinct architectural features thus come together in one building, rather than being limited to a single style.

Kon Tum Seminary was built from 1935 to 1938. Its architecture resembles that of the cathedral, but the seminary is larger. This brings different aspects to the fore compared with the wooden church: the church is defined by its entirely wooden construction and combination of two architectural styles, while the seminary stands out for its construction period and its size relative to the cathedral.

The second floor of the seminary houses a room on the history of the missions in Kon Tum since the mid-19th century. The room contains artefacts and documents. This provides a specific historical context for the seminary in addition to its architecture.

Culture in the wider city area

A brocade textile production and exhibition centre is located on the grounds of Kon Klor Rong House in the Thắng Lợi administrative area. If you’d like to include this site in your plans, check in advance to find out whether the centre is currently active.

Kon Kơ Tu is recognised as a community tourism destination at the provincial level within Kon Tum’s administrative area. As part of community tourism development, traditional weaving, basketry, rice wine production and traditional musical instruments are being promoted in the community tourism villages of Kon Kơ Tu and Kon Jơ Dri, as well as in Kon Klor village. These are among the cultural focuses of community tourism development.

The Kon Klor Suspension Bridge spans the Đắk Bla. It adds a scenic accent, while the brocade textiles and promoted craft traditions represent a different focus in the wider city area. When planning, you can therefore decide whether you’re especially interested in the river landscape, architecture or cultural themes.

History and remembrance

Kon Tum Prison was built by the French between 1915 and 1917 and was one of the earliest political prisons established in the Central Highlands. It commemorates the political prisoners’ struggle of 12 December 1931. The construction history and commemoration thus offer two different perspectives on the site: the period of construction places the origins of the complex in context, while the specific date identifies the historical event being remembered.

Taken together, the buildings and memorial sites reflect different periods: the wooden church was completed in 1918, the seminary was built later, from 1935 to 1938, and the prison points to the years 1915 to 1917 and the commemoration of 1931. This distinction can help you decide which themes to focus on during your stay in Kon Tum, without treating the different sites and their histories as interchangeable.
