Vu Ban District reveals itself through religious sites, long-standing festivals and hands-on craft experiences. This diversity is particularly evident at the Phủ-Dầy Complex: several revered sites are connected here, while the festival days follow the lunar calendar. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth keeping both the individual attractions and the special dates in mind.

Phủ-Dầy: Architecture and Worship

The Phủ-Dầy Complex is located in Kim Thái Commune, Vụ Bản District. It comprises Phủ Tiên Hương, Phủ Vân Cát and the Mausoleum of Liễu Hạnh. Liễu Hạnh is worshipped here; the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism describes her as one of the Four Immortals of the Vietnamese spiritual pantheon. The complex therefore brings several sites together in a religious context that shapes the character of this destination.

Phủ Tiên Hương was built during the Lê-Cảnh-Trị period, from 1663 to 1671, and has been restored several times. The site comprises 19 buildings with a total of 81 large and small rooms. Its southwest-facing orientation looks toward the Tiên-Hương Mountains. These details give a concrete sense of the site's size and layout, without reducing its individual buildings to a single function.

Festivals and Markets According to the Lunar Calendar

The Phủ-Dầy Festival includes torchlight processions, processions carrying sacred scriptures, the Hoa trượng hội, spiritual medium performances and folk games. Program details may change from year to year. One particularly specific date is the 6th day of the 3rd lunar month: a procession then travels from Phủ Tiên Hương to Gội Pagoda, where people pray for sacred scriptures. Participants include older residents, spiritual mediums, and many local and out-of-town visitors.

The dates for Hội chợ Viềng are also tied to the lunar calendar: it takes place on the 8th day of the first lunar month in Kim Thái Commune, Vụ Bản District, and in Nam Giang Town, Nam Trực District. Chợ Viềng in Trung Thành, Kim Thái Commune, has its own specified time window: it takes place only once a year, from midnight on the 7th to the morning of the 8th day of the Tết New Year. This market is also associated with the worship of Liễu Hạnh. Since the corresponding Gregorian dates change each year, the lunar calendar date is particularly useful for determining when to visit.

Other Places of Cultural History

The temple dedicated to Trạng nguyên Lương Thế Vinh is located in Cao Phương, Liên Bảo Commune. It has been recognized as a national historical and cultural monument since 1990. Another site is Chùa Hổ Sơn, also known as Quảng Nghiêm Thiền Tự. It lies at the foot of Mount Hổ Sơn in Liên Minh Commune and is a place of worship for Princess Huyền Trân.

Chùa Hổ Sơn preserves 27 religious statues and 27 old religious objects. These include statues of two princesses and four imperial decrees. The collection and display of objects may change. The annual festival in Hổ Sơn Village commemorates Princess Huyền Trân and is held by the villagers on the 9th day of the 4th lunar month; the Gregorian date therefore varies each year. It is advisable to check the specific festival date before your trip.

Agriculture and Traditional Handicrafts

The Núi Ngăm Ecotourism Area (Ngăm Resort) offers agricultural experiences such as growing vegetables, fishing, catching ducks and cooking in clay pots. The activities described also include visits to the animal husbandry area, the botanical garden and the medicinal plant garden. Craft activities range from pottery and making paper flowers to weaving with rattan and bamboo. Specific programs may change; check which experiences are currently available before your trip.

Ninh Bình as a Separate Regional Context

The wider destination of Ninh Bình includes the Trang An Landscape Complex, a mixed cultural and natural heritage site in Ninh Binh Province. There, karst peaks and towers are connected by underground waterways, some of which can be explored by small boat. Tam Coc–Bich Dong is located in Nam Hoa Lu Commune and is an outstanding destination within Trang An. Visitors can take a boat trip on the Ngo Dong River there. These regional landscapes and boating experiences offer a distinct perspective on Ninh Bình alongside the temples, markets and traditions of Vu Ban District.
