When looking for a hotel in Ninh Bình, you can plan your trip around the interests you want to focus on: distinctive mountain formations, religious and literary heritage, city history, crafts or food culture. These themes reveal different sides of the city and can be given individual emphasis. For a first overview, notable landscape features are useful, as are specific details about buildings, a museum and the Phúc Lộc craft village.

Mountains and views over the city

Mount Kỳ Lân preserves clear traces of several earlier advances of the sea. These include wave marks and sediment layers containing animal bones and the shells of marine molluscs. This evidence helps determine the age and course of the repeated advances and retreats of the sea. The mountain is in the centre of Ninh Bình, is more than 50 metres high and is shaped like a lion’s head facing north. Its features include five caves: Hang Tối, Hang Sáng, Hang Ngang, Hang Đền and Hang Trung. There is also a Buddhist pagoda and Nghênh Phong Các on the mountain.

Núi Non Nước, also called Dục Thúy Sơn, is known as the “Mountain of Poetry”: its rocky landscape preserves hundreds of poems by renowned poets. The summit is reached by 72 brick and stone steps, divided into five sections. From the mountain, visitors can take in the entire urban area of Ninh Bình. Here, literary heritage meets expansive views across the city.

Religious and literary sites

Non Nước Pagoda is in the Thanh Bình ward of Ninh Bình. It was built during the Lý dynasty, under King Lý Nhân Tông, by the royal monk Nguyễn Minh Không for the worship of Buddha. Its history connects the site with a specific religious dedication and the reign of the Lý dynasty.

Buildings and city history

The temple of the scholar Trương Hán Siêu in central Ninh Bình is a tourist attraction and a place of spiritual and cultural significance. Built in 1998 in the chữ Đinh style, the complex comprises a three-bay front hall and a two-bay rear sanctuary. The building has two tiled roofs with upturned eaves. The layout of the hall and sanctuary, together with the roof design, gives the structure distinct architectural features.

Ninh Bình Museum lies south of Thúy Sơn Cultural Park. The three-storey building is designed to rise from the landscape like a blooming lotus. Its exhibits include archaeological finds from Mán Bạc, a site dated to between 3,000 and 4,000 years ago. The museum and temple offer different ways to explore the city’s history: archaeological finds in one, and a building with clearly identifiable architecture and religious and cultural significance in the other.

Food culture and woodworking

Several food streets and areas have developed in the city, attracting visitors from near and far. They include Phố 8, Vân Giang breakfast street and the food district in the Hoa Lư Old Quarter. They give food culture its own place in trip planning, alongside the city’s landscape and cultural attractions.

About 2 kilometres southeast of the city centre, in Ninh Phong ward, lies the Phúc Lộc woodworking village. In addition to everyday furniture, traditional wooden handicrafts are made there: tea cabinets, chests, devotional figures, and wooden objects for religious ceremonies, festivals and the restoration of temples, pagodas and shrines. The carving is considered particularly fine. The objects serve practical purposes as well as religious and festive ones, and are also used in restoring sacred buildings.

Getting there and finding your way around

Ninh Bình lies on Vietnam’s north–south railway line. Two specific reference points also help with orientation: Mount Kỳ Lân is in the centre, while Phúc Lộc is about 2 kilometres southeast of the city centre. This distinguishes a central landscape and cultural site from a craft village to the southeast.
