Quảng Ninh: Karst Bay, Island Coastlines and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Quảng Ninh
Quảng Ninh brings together an impressive seascape, island coastlines, natural attractions and sites steeped in tradition. The Hạ Long Bay–Cát Bà Archipelago World Heritage Site is especially notable, spanning Quảng Ninh Province and the city of Hải Phòng. Limestone islands and islets define the landscape, considered the world’s most extensive and best-known example of marine tower karst. Hạ Long Bay was recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1994 and 2000. In 2023, the World Heritage Site was expanded through a significant boundary modification.
Sea, Islands and Nature Experiences
Bái Tử Long Bay also offers a distinct way to experience the region. Bái Tử Long National Park is an ASEAN Heritage Park in Quảng Ninh Province. Ten sightseeing and travel routes for the bay were announced in 2025; Route 1 begins at Ao Tiên Port. Before planning, check which trips are currently available. A total of 2,415 species have been recorded in the bay, including 106 species listed in Vietnam’s Red Data Book or on the global Red List. These figures may be updated as further surveys are conducted.
On Cô Tô, an island district in the northeast of the province, Bãi Tàu Đắm, Hồng Vàn and Vàn Chảy are among the beaches mentioned. The ten-hectare forest of Chõi trees offers another perspective on the island: when the Chõi flowers bloom in April, it is a place for trekking, photography and research. Since April 2023, diving at Vụng Tròn, Hòn Chim and Hòn Ông Tích off Thanh Lân has been authorized as part of Cô Tô’s underwater tourism offering. Check current operators and conditions in advance.
You can explore the coast on foot in other places, too. Above Đầu Rồng Beach on Cái Chiên, a seafront promenade more than one kilometer long is a place for walking. Trà Cổ Beach in Móng Cái 1 is more than 17 kilometers long. In Bình Liêu, the restored “Dinosaur’s Back” mountain trail connects border markers 1302 and 1305. It is about two kilometers long, has around 2,000 steps and leads to border marker 1305.
At Pạc Sủi Waterfall in Yên Than, in Tiên Yên District, 14 cascades follow one another, each with a clear pool below. Visitors can also enjoy Tiên Yên specialties prepared by local residents, including the famous Tiên Yên chicken. At low tide, explore the Đồng Rui mangroves by basket boat or on foot, and collect crabs and snails. An excursion from Đồng Rui to Mũi Lòng Vàng can also include a wooden-boat ride to the sand island, catching seafood with local residents and preparing your own catch.
Pilgrimage Routes, Cultural Heritage and Festivals
The Yên Tử area in Quảng Ninh is considered the birthplace of the Trúc Lâm tradition. It includes sections of an ancient pilgrimage route associated with the abdication of monk-king Trần Nhân Tông and the beginning of his monastic life; current trail conditions may vary. On July 12, 2025, the Yên Tử, Vĩnh Nghiêm, Côn Sơn and Kiếp Bạc monuments and scenic landscape complex was inscribed on the World Heritage List.
The Đền Cửa Ông–Cặp Tiên complex is an important spiritual destination in Quảng Ninh and a highlight on a connected spiritual route through the northeast. The Đền Cửa Ông monument complex preserves old architectural features as well as historic statues from the 19th century. Its festival is recognized as national intangible cultural heritage; it takes place on the third and fourth days of the second lunar month and during the eighth lunar month. Check the exact dates and program before your trip.
Festivals and crafts offer more ways to connect with the region’s culture. The Tiên Công Festival is a state-recognized cultural festival held annually at the Tiên Công Shrine in Phong Cốc. Celebrations include folk games and traditional cultural activities that draw visitors from other regions. The festival at Đình Trà Cổ communal house, a cultural landmark on the border, takes place on the first day of the sixth lunar month; convert the date for the year in question. At the traditional Hưng Học craft village, established around the mid-15th century, you can learn how local fish traps and bamboo boats are made.
Museum and Trip Planning
The Quảng Ninh Museum is part of the sightseeing program in Hạ Long. It displays around 3,000 exhibits from a total collection of 65,000 objects. Its themes include the sea and nature, history and coal mining; these figures may change as the displays are updated. Interactive screens offer images and sounds, simulations of historical content, information areas and puzzle games. The audio guide includes 33 audio commentaries on exhibition areas and 12 separate commentaries on national treasures; this content may also change as the exhibitions are updated.
To choose where to stay, first decide what to focus on during your trip: seascapes and islands, trails and nature experiences, or cultural sites and festival days. The different destinations offer concrete points of reference. For festivals with specific dates and excursions whose operating conditions may change, check current dates and offers in advance.
