Thái Nguyên: Pagodas, Tea and History
Accommodation in Thái Nguyên
Thái Nguyên brings together historic religious buildings, memorial sites and tea culture. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you want to devote your stay mainly to cultural sites in the city or also to tea production in Tân Cương. The pagoda, temple and museum offer different perspectives on the region’s history and culture.
Pagoda, Temple and Remembrance
Phù Liễn Pagoda, also called Phù Liễn tự or Phù Chân Thiền tự, stands on a hill covered with old trees in the Hoàng Văn Thụ ward, in the center of Thái Nguyên. The pagoda, which has been restored several times, preserves historic architectural features: the Tam-Bảo Hall, the shrine to the Mother Goddess, the ancestral shrine building and an old stupa garden. Its history also includes serving as a refuge and hiding place for some of the insurgents of Hoàng Hoa Thám and Đội Cấn in the final years of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century.
Đội Cấn Temple is located on historic Đội Cấn Hill in the center of Thái Nguyên, on Phủ Liễn Street in the Hoàng Văn Thụ ward. It honors Đội Cấn, the leader of the Thái Nguyên uprising, and his insurgents. During the resistance against French rule, the temple was destroyed and rebuilt by Thái Nguyên Province in 2002. Quan Triều communal house also has its own historical significance: it is dedicated to Dương Tự Minh and was recognized as a provincial historical relic by the provincial government on December 31, 2019, under Decision No. 4396/QĐ-UBND.
The National Historical Memorial Site of Youth Volunteer Unit 915, Unit 91 Bắc Thái, is located in the Gia Sàng ward. In the first quarter of 2026, it received 208 visitor groups, with more than 50,100 visitors coming to tour the site, hold incense ceremonies and pay their respects. Check the current arrangements before your visit.
Museum and Tea Culture
The Museum of the Cultures of Vietnam’s Ethnic Groups preserves more than 40,000 original documents and artifacts relating to the traditional cultures of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups. The museum offers practical cultural activities for groups; advance registration and an appointment are required. This is a specific option for travelers who would like to add a shared cultural activity to their stay.
At the Tân Cương Tea Culture Space, numerous tea artifacts illustrate the tea-making process and the history of tea cultivation in Thái Nguyên. Visitors can also take part in tea-making activities there. Tân Cương is an officially recognized community tourism destination in Thái Nguyên and is authorized to welcome domestic and international visitor groups. Alongside historic sites, tea cultivation and processing can therefore be a focus of your stay.
Transport and Trip Planning
For getting around the region, Thái Nguyên is connected by several major roads: National Highway QL 3 runs between Hanoi, Thái Nguyên, Bắc Kạn and Cao Bằng; QL 1B heads toward Lạng Sơn and QL 37 toward Bắc Giang and Tuyên Quang. There are also the Hà Nội–Thái Nguyên and Lưu Xá–Kép railway lines. If you are planning to travel by train, check the current timetables separately.
Within the wider destination of Thành phố Thái Nguyên
The wider destination of Thành phố Thái Nguyên offers further context on tea culture. Knowledge of the cultivation and processing of Tân Cương tea was recognized as Vietnam’s national intangible cultural heritage in 2023; the recognition applies, among others, to the people of Tân Cương in Thành phố Thái Nguyên. Tân Cương is also known as an area for tea cultivation and production. Thái Nguyên tea is considered a green tea with uniformly small, hook-shaped leaves, a glutinous-rice aroma, an astringent taste and a lingering sweetness.
Every year, the tea festival “Hương sắc Trà xuân – Vùng chè đặc sản Tân Cương” takes place in Tân Cương, Thành phố Thái Nguyên. Competitions include fast tea picking, artisanal roasting, tea packaging and tea brewing; the specific program may vary. If you would like to include the festival in your plans, check the dates and program details in advance. The wider destination also includes Thái Hải ecological preservation village, with traditional stilt houses in Thịnh Đức, and Chợ Thái. This market has a trading tradition dating back more than a century and is located on Đội Cấn Street in the Trưng Vương ward of Thành phố Thái Nguyên.
