Cultural heritage, architectural history and local traditions

The Hồ Dynasty Citadel lies between the Mã and Bưởi rivers in Vĩnh Lộc District, Thanh Hóa Province. It was built in 1397. Large limestone blocks were used for the inner citadel. The complex represents a new development in construction techniques, as well as an adaptation of geomantic urban planning in an East and Southeast Asian context. A specific construction date, distinctive choice of material and planning concept come together here—interesting points of reference for travelers interested in historic architecture.

Lam Kinh is in Thọ Xuân District, Thanh Hóa Province, and is regarded as the homeland and birthplace of the Lê Dynasty, as well as the birthplace of Lê Lợi. Lam Sơn was considered the second capital of Đại Việt after Thăng Long. The Lam Kinh Festival begins every year in the eighth lunar month; if you plan your visit around it, check the exact event date in advance. While in Lam Kinh, you can also try Chè lam Phủ Quảng, a pastry made from glutinous rice flour, sugarcane molasses, peanuts and ginger.

The Ancient House of Lương Trọng Duệ in the old village of Đông Sơn is a 200-year-old wooden house with architecture typical of the 19th century. The Bà Triệu temple complex in Thanh Hóa Province commemorates the female general Triệu Thị Trinh, also known as Bà Triệu. The temple festival lasts three days and includes ceremonies, a palanquin procession and folk performances.

Con Moong Cave is in Thanh Hóa Province, within the area of Cúc Phương National Park. The national park preserves archaeological relics from prehistoric times.

Nature reserves and landscapes

Pù Luông is a nature reserve in Bá Thước and Quan Hóa districts of Thanh Hóa Province. Its landscape features include rice terraces, palm groves, waterwheels and cascading waterfalls.

Bến En National Park extends across Như Thanh and Như Xuân districts. It includes more than 4,000 hectares of lake surface area, with 21 islands, and protects rare animals such as red-shanked douc langurs, hornbills and white-cheeked gibbons. The park also has areas of flat hills suitable for camping, picnics and overnight stays in tents.

Seasonal community-based ecotourism is developing in the mountainous regions of Thanh Hóa, with village visits and trekking through forests. Golden rice terraces cover the slopes, especially when the rice is ripe. This gives nature and cultural experiences here a seasonal dimension.

Coast and festivals

Sầm Sơn Beach has about nine kilometers of coastline and a gentle slope. The conditions are suitable for swimming and recreational activities. A festival in Sầm Sơn is also tied to a specific date in the lunar calendar: the annual festival at Độc-Cước Temple takes place on the 16th day of the second lunar month. If attending a festival is part of your travel plans, check the exact date in advance.
