Hue can be explored through its royal history, court music and distinctive dishes. The Citadel presents the past of the Nguyễn dynasty within a vast architectural complex; individual towers and theaters bring specific aspects into sharper focus. The local cuisine also features a variety of preparation methods. If you are looking for a hotel for a culturally focused trip, these themes can help guide your choice of destination.

History and Architecture

From 1802 to 1945, Hue was Vietnam’s political, cultural and religious center under the Nguyễn dynasty. The Citadel of Hue includes the Imperial City, the Forbidden Purple City and other royal palaces. Visitors can explore the Citadel’s palaces, pavilions and theaters. The Imperial City is a walled area with tree-lined avenues, parks and canals crossed by old bridges. An individual building can also be placed in context: the seven-story tower of the Thiên Mụ Pagoda, Phước Duyên, was built between 1844 and 1846 at the order of King Thiệu Trị and is 21.24 meters high. Its construction took place within the Nguyễn period of 1802 to 1945, anchoring this long historical era in a specific period. The complex of the Celestial Lady (Thiên Mụ) is one of the most venerated religious sites in Hue.

Court Music and Theater

Nhã nhạc, Vietnamese court music, is an art form of the Imperial City recognized by UNESCO. Under the Nguyễn dynasty, it was performed at important ceremonies of the royal family. A named venue in this theater history is Duyệt Thị Đường, within the Imperial City. The theater was built during the Nguyễn dynasty as the first theater to open for royal music. In this way, the ceremonial role of the music and a specific performance venue are linked in a shared historical context.

Perfume River and Cityscape

The Perfume River flows through Hue and, together with Ngu Bình Mountain, shapes the landscape and symbolic setting of the historic monuments. Visitors can experience Nhã nhạc during a boat trip on the river. This connects court music with another view of Hue: alongside the walled areas of the Imperial City, the river landscape forms part of the monuments’ surroundings.

Dishes from Hue

Bánh khoái is a pan-fried crêpe with shrimp, quail egg, bean sprouts and pork belly. It is served with fresh lettuce and a thick peanut and pork liver dipping sauce. Bánh nậm is a steamed parcel made from thin rice-flour dough, filled with fresh shrimp and shrimp flakes stir-fried with garlic, spring onions and onions. It is folded in banana leaves for steaming. Bánh bèo are small rice cakes steamed in little ceramic dishes and topped with dried shrimp, pork cracklings, shallots and spring onion oil. The three dishes differ in form and preparation: Bánh khoái is fried, Bánh nậm is steamed in leaves, and Bánh bèo is prepared in individual dishes. Đông Ba Market offers fresh produce and a culinary introduction to Hue cuisine.
