Discover Vinh Long: Temples, Museum and Culture
Accommodation in Vinh Long
Vinh Long brings together religious architecture and local history, with a museum, recurring ceremonies and a nearby island to visit. If you’re looking for a hotel for a cultural trip, these themes can help you tailor your stay to your interests. Several commemorations and festivals follow the lunar calendar, which may be a factor when choosing your travel dates.
Architecture and Religious History
Thất Phủ Miếu in District 5 is a religious and architectural complex in the style of southern China. Craftspeople from Fujian built it between 1892 and 1909. Its layout follows a quadrangular courtyard plan: a front hall, main sanctuary, and east and west wings make up the complex. Connecting structures, called “hà cầu,” provide passage between the areas. On January 25, 1994, the miếu was recognized as a national historic-cultural monument of architectural significance.
Công Thần Miếu is also recognized as a national historic-cultural monument. Văn Thánh Miếu, in turn, was completed in 1866 as a Confucian temple. The complex includes the Văn Xương Pavilion, where Võ Trường Toản and Phan Thanh Giản are venerated. Each site offers its own perspective on religious tradition and architectural history.
Museum and Collections
Vĩnh Long Museum is in the city center, next to a tourist boat pier on the Cổ Chiên River. Its indoor exhibitions cover revolutionary history and the cultures of the Kinh, Hoa and Khmer peoples. There is also a reconstructed old house dedicated to Hùng Vương. In total, the museum preserves more than 28,000 documents and artifacts relating to the revolutionary history and ethnic cultures of Vĩnh Long Province.
The museum brings together several themes: historical documents, cultural collections and a reconstructed house. This sets its focus apart from the temple complexes, where architecture and religious functions are more specifically at the heart of each site. The Hùng Vương Commemoration Festival is also held at the museum each year on the tenth day of the third lunar month.
Festivals and Lunar Calendar Dates
At Công Thần Miếu, the annual Xuân tế cầu an festival lasts four days and nights. It includes traditional rituals and folk activities. At Thất Phủ Miếu, annual commemorations are held for Phước Đức Chánh Thần, Tam Nguyên and Tứ Quý. Special dates include Ông Day on the 13th day of the first and fifth lunar months, and the year-end ceremony on the 15th day of the twelfth lunar month.
Văn Thánh Miếu also holds annual Confucian ceremonies for Khổng Tử, as well as for saints and scholars; these take place on the Đinh days in spring and autumn. Since the dates follow the lunar calendar, check them before your trip if you want to plan around a particular ceremony.
Getting Around Between the City and River
Đình Long Thanh, also called Long Thanh Võ Miếu, is in District 5 on the Long Hồ River, about three kilometers from the city center. Vĩnh Long Museum is a separate point of reference in the city center, next to a pier on the Cổ Chiên River. Vĩnh Long Passenger Port began operating in October 2022 and serves as a departure and arrival point for tourist passenger boats on inland waterways. If your trip depends on a boat connection, check the current schedule.
Island Option and Local Cuisine
Nearby is An Bình, also known as Cù lao Minh: the island lies in Long Hồ District between the Tiền River and Cổ Chiên River. It takes about 30 minutes to reach by boat from Vĩnh Long; actual travel time may vary depending on river conditions and your departure point. At Vinh Sang on An Bình Island, folk activities include pond fishing, crossing a monkey bridge and boating. The program may change, so check which activities are available for your visit in advance.
In District 1 of Vĩnh Long, Tài Có restaurant serves a traditional fish hot pot based on a family recipe. The dish has been well known for more than 20 years and is served with beef, shrimp, squid and local river vegetables. If you’re planning to visit specifically for this specialty, it’s best to check what’s currently available in advance.
When choosing a hotel, you could first consider whether you want to plan your travel dates around a ceremony, or whether the museum, architecture and An Bình Island are your main priorities. Festival dates offer a specific reason to take the lunar calendar into account; the other themes give you different ways to focus your stay in Vinh Long, regardless.
