Ventnor focuses on coastal experiences that vary in character with the tides and the season. At Ventnor Beach, reef platforms are exposed at low tide, while at high tide there is a section of beach suitable for swimming. Other spots offer coastal views, whale watching or the history of a shipwreck. Two specific questions can help with your planning: Would you like to plan beach activities around the tides, or are coastal views and observing nature your main interests? Whale sightings are seasonal and are not guaranteed.

Ventnor Beach: Beach and Tides

Ventnor Beach is a long, narrow beach. Reef platforms are exposed at low tide; at high tide, there is a section of beach suitable for swimming. This tide-dependent distinction is an important practical consideration when visiting: if you want to swim, plan around high tide, while the reef platforms shape the coastal landscape at low tide. Check the tides before your beach visit if you want to plan your activity around either of these features. Activities at Ventnor Beach include swimming, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, beach walks, fishing and beach games. These activities range from pursuits in the water to activities on shore.

The SS Speke Wreck Site

The wreck site of the SS Speke is also visible at low tide. The tides are therefore a planning consideration not only for a beach visit, but also if you want to see this shipwreck site. The Speke was the second-largest square-rigged ship ever built. With this type of rigging, the sails are attached to yards, the horizontal spars on the mast. The wreck site thus combines coastal views with a specific maritime history.

Whale Watching and Coastal Views

At Grossard Point in Ventnor, you can look out for whales entering the bay close to shore. This is a seasonal opportunity; sightings are not guaranteed. The Whale Discovery Trail leads to several coastal viewpoints. Information boards offer insights into whales’ lives and behaviour and provide guidance on whale watching. The two experiences have different focuses: at Grossard Point, the possibility of a sighting takes centre stage, while the trail also includes information about whales and how to watch them.

Two Walks with Different Views

The Kitty Miller Bay Walk offers beautiful coastal views as it loops around the headland and bay. By contrast, the Pyramid Rock to Berrys Beach Walk follows a gently undulating clifftop path and offers spectacular views of Phillip Island’s south coast, including Point Grant and The Nobbies. The descriptions differ mainly in the landscape each walk looks out over: the Kitty Miller Bay Walk takes in the headland and bay, while the Pyramid Rock walk looks towards the south coast and the named landmarks. If you are choosing between the two walks, you can use this distinction as a guide without assuming a walking time or difficulty level.
