Accommodation in Berriwillock
Berriwillock is located on the Calder Highway. The town’s history and seasonal leisure activities reveal different sides of the place. If you’re looking for a hotel in Berriwillock, these themes can help you decide how it fits with your travel plans: would you mainly like to explore historic sites, or include golf and swimming in your itinerary?
War Memorial and remembrance
The Berriwillock War Memorial was unveiled on 6 May 1920. A First World War-era soldier figure carved from pink granite is supported by four columns above a granite base. Plaques were added later to commemorate people who served in the Second World War, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The unveiling and the later plaques thus mark two stages in the town’s remembrance. The memorial offers a tangible perspective on remembrance of the First World War, along with later references to other conflicts.
Business and building history
Mills Store has served the Berriwillock community since 1925. Harold bought the business from Fred Higman on 1 May 1925, his 21st birthday. A modern extension was built and opened in 1983. The purchase and extension represent different milestones: first a change of ownership, then a structural addition. The store’s history thus complements the memorial’s story of remembrance with a glimpse of community life.
The Golden Crown Hotel offers another historical perspective. Fairbanks and Wilson built it in Berriwillock in 1896 using local limestone and bricks. The bricks were made and fired on the banks of Tyrrell Creek. The building’s history therefore includes its construction materials as well as its year of construction. While the Golden Crown Hotel focuses on building history, the War Memorial is about remembrance and the plaques added later. The two sites can thus be considered through different historical themes.
Golf and seasonal planning
Berriwillock Golf Club is a seasonal 9-hole sand-scrape course in the flat Mallee landscape. This natural course features Mallee trees, as well as elevated, sloping sandy areas. The flat landscape forms the setting; the described sandy areas and their slopes characterise the course itself. If golf is relevant to your travel plans, take its seasonal status into account and check the dates in advance.
Berriwillock Swimming Pool is also seasonal. If you plan to include swimming or golf as a set part of your itinerary, check the relevant dates before your trip. This lets you match the seasonal activities to your travel dates rather than assuming they are available all year round.
Putting Berriwillock in context as a destination
When choosing a destination, you can consider two factors separately: Berriwillock’s location on the Calder Highway as a guide for your journey, and the historical and seasonal themes you’ll find there. The memorial, Mills Store and Golden Crown Hotel offer different historical perspectives; the golf club and swimming pool are seasonal. If you plan to include one of the leisure activities, align your travel dates with its season.
