Dromana: Coast, Gardens and Local History
Accommodation in Dromana
Dromana combines coastal paths and opportunities to enjoy the beach with insights into local history; nearby, Heronswood adds a garden landscape to the picture. When planning a stay, you can choose between spending time at the foreshore, taking a garden tour and exploring historical topics. Each offering has a different focus, from walking paths and picnic areas to plant collections and local records.
Heronswood: Garden, Tour and Plants
The historic Heronswood estate is near Dromana, covers two acres and offers views across the bay. Its living plant collection includes Diggers plants; historic trees provide shade, while winding paths open up views of Port Phillip Bay and beyond. The plants and the distant views are two distinct features of the garden.
Garden tours introduce the history of the garden’s design and its special plant areas, and also explore the newly established seed trial garden. The tour is designed to last 45 minutes and accommodate no more than 15 participants. The tour schedule and format may change; confirm both with the operator beforehand.
Heronswood offers families a pollinator scavenger hunt in the gardens, complete with a search list. It has a different focus from the tour, which covers the garden’s design, plant areas and seed trial garden. Check the current availability of the scavenger hunt with the operator before your visit.
Coast, Pier and Paths
Dromana’s foreshore reserve includes grassy picnic areas, shelters, walking paths and a small designated camping area. The camping area’s availability may vary; if it is important to your plans, confirm it in advance.
The Dromana Bay Trail is a gravel path that runs between trees along the Dromana Foreshore, connecting the Safety Beach and McCrae ends. About halfway along the trail are Dromana Pier and the Dromana Lifesaving Club. These two places are notable landmarks along the foreshore path.
In the wider regional area, the longest continuous section of the Bay Trail starts at Anthony’s Nose in Dromana and runs to Rye, a distance of 11 km. Check local trail updates before travelling.
Dromana Pier is 200 metres long. Fishing from the pier is popular; check the latest access information before visiting. Dromana’s quiet, sandy beaches offer opportunities for safe swimming and boating. Conditions may vary.
