Dunkeld brings together local history and art with trails in the surrounding area. In town, a museum and the Dunkeld Heritage Trail tell stories of historical events, while galleries display ceramics, paintings and drawings. Those wishing to include walks and scenic views will find more options nearby. For planning, it is helpful to distinguish between them: the museum, trail and galleries are in Dunkeld; Wurgarri, Bainggug and Mud-Dadjug are nearby destinations.

Local History and Collections

The Dunkeld & District Historical Museum preserves a large number of artefacts from numerous periods and events in social history. Its collection also includes material relating to Major Mitchell and his expedition’s exploration of south-western Victoria. This brings a broad view of social history together with material about a specific expedition.

The Dunkeld Heritage Trail tells a specific story from Dunkeld: the fire in January 1944 that destroyed a third of the houses and shops in Dunkeld. The trail includes 26 sites with iron information plaques and is an easy, accessible walk for everyone through Dunkeld’s history. It complements the museum: while the museum covers numerous periods and events in social history, the trail focuses on a particular turning point in the town.

The Australian Light Horse Heritage Collection displays Light Horse memorabilia, including a tunic worn by a Charger at Beersheba. The Dunkeld Arboretum highlights a different connection: it presents a living collection of trees from around the world and also includes an old sawmill.

Art, Galleries and Food

The Waiting Room Art Gallery displays fine ceramics, ceramic sculptures, paintings and drawings by Anne Fleming. It is opposite the Royal Mail Hotel and takes part in Dunkeld’s Galleries and Gardens weekends on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month. Check the specific dates before your visit.

The Dunkeld Garage Gallery gives artists the opportunity to present their work to visitors and locals. Visits are by appointment. There is also a particular culinary focus: The Old Bakery specialises in handmade sourdough bread, gourmet pies, pastries and cakes.

Walks and Scenic Views Nearby

The Wurgarri (Mount Sturgeon) Walk offers panoramic views of the surrounding ranges, volcanic plains and community in the area around Dunkeld. Bainggug (The Piccaninny), also close to Dunkeld, is an easy walk suitable for most hikers. Wildflowers bloom there in spring. The two walks offer different highlights: Wurgarri is known for its expansive views, while Bainggug offers an easy walk and seasonal blooms.

The Mud-Dadjug (Mount Abrupt) Walk passes through bushland in Gariwerd and over sandstone rocks to the summit. From there, you can look north to the Serra Range and south to Dunkeld. This walk offers a different experience from Wurgarri’s panoramic views or Bainggug’s easy walk: here, bushland, sandstone and the view from the summit shape the landscape experience.

Dunkeld is the southern gateway to the Grampians Peaks Trail. The Dunkeld and Grampians Visitor Information Centre provides public showers around the clock for hikers on the Grampians Peaks Trail. Check this service information before your trip.
