Dunolly: Gold History, Cycling and Walking
Accommodation in Dunolly
Gold-mining history, historic architecture and outdoor trails are among the themes you can consider when planning your trip to Dunolly. The Old Lead Diggings and the Historic Precinct offer different historical perspectives; cycling routes and a lakeside circuit add outdoor activity. If you are looking for a hotel in Dunolly, these interests can help guide the focus of your stay.
Gold history and historic buildings
The Old Lead Diggings, Dunolly (H2402), are located on Dunolly-Rheola Road in Dunolly. The site is of state significance and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register as both a registered place and a registered archaeological place. The Heritage Council made the registration decision on 1 December 2020.
The Old Lead Diggings include several thousand surviving mining shafts. They are associated with alluvial deep lead mining along the Main Lead and its tributary leads. These many shafts draw attention to gold mining along these leads and tributaries, rather than to a single building.
The Dunolly Historic Precinct includes the Town Hall on Broadway, built in 1884. On Market Street, it includes the courthouse, stables and lock-up dating from 1863, as well as a police station from the 1950s. These construction dates give the historic buildings different points of reference within the townscape.
The precinct offers a self-guided walking tour to explore the town’s history. The Dunolly Goldfields Museum offers another perspective on local history: its collection includes casts of gold nuggets, photographs, firearms and local history records. Alongside the historic buildings and mining shafts, collection items and written records are therefore distinct subjects of interest.
Cycling and walking
The Dunolly Cycle Tracks start at Dunolly Town Hall. They consist of signposted forest roads and trails ranging from 14 to 47 kilometres. The rides through the forest pass historic gold-mining towns; the stated distance range can help you factor the length of a cycling trip into your plans. As conditions on the trails may vary, check them before setting out.
Dredge Hole is a lake surrounded by bushland. An easy 550-metre circuit follows the water’s edge, with picnic tables along the way offering views of the lake. The cycling routes and this circuit represent different types and scales of activity: you can plan a short walk here or a longer ride on one of the signposted routes.
Plan around market dates
The Dunolly Community Market offers local produce, crafts and furniture; the selection may vary from one market date to another. The market is scheduled on Broadway on the second Sunday of each month, from 9 am to 2 pm. Check before your trip to confirm that it is going ahead.
