Jeparit brings together memories of Sir Robert Menzies, the Wimmera River and the history of the Wimmera Mallee. The town is particularly interesting when choosing a hotel if you want to explore these themes in Jeparit itself and include nearby Lake Hindmarsh as a separate destination. The attractions have different focuses: Menzies Square and the museum tell stories of history, while the river trails highlight the river and Jeparit’s connection to the water.

History in Jeparit

Menzies Square commemorates Sir Robert Menzies’s birthplace and life. Information boards and replicas of the original Menzies family shopfront bring the family’s history to life in the same place.

The Wimmera Mallee Pioneer Museum in Jeparit depicts life in the Wimmera Mallee in the early 1900s. Its historical collections include agricultural machinery, horse-drawn vehicles, original pioneer homesteads, a church, a hall, a blacksmith’s shop, a pharmacy, a state school and a gaol. The difference between the square and the museum lies in their perspectives: the square focuses on Menzies, while the museum focuses on the historical way of life in the Wimmera Mallee.

River trails and local connections

Barringgi Gadyin (Wimmera River) flows through Jeparit. The Edward John Eyre Heritage River Walk follows the river through the town. Its features include an explorer sculpture and information boards about Jeparit’s connection to the river; the Jeparit Waterfront Precinct lies halfway along the route. The river shapes both the route and the content of the boards.

The Jeparit Heritage Walk has a different focus: this self-guided route runs through the town and offers a way to explore Jeparit’s history. By contrast, the Edward John Eyre Heritage River Walk follows the Wimmera River and explores Jeparit’s connection to it. The town walk and the river-focused trail therefore have different emphases.

The Wimmera River Discovery Trail connects Dimboola with Jeparit. Unlike the two trails associated with Jeparit, it connects two towns. Conditions on the trail can vary seasonally. If you plan to walk it, check the seasonal trail conditions in advance.

Lake Hindmarsh near Jeparit

Access to the Lake Hindmarsh Lake Reserve is via the Western Highway, 22 km north of Dimboola; west of Jeparit, the Nhill-Jeparit Road leads to the reserve. The access road is suitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles.

When Lake Hindmarsh is full, it is a popular spot for fishing, water skiing, swimming and canoeing. These activities depend on water levels. If you plan to do any of them, keep the water level in mind as a requirement.
