When looking for a hotel in Lethbridge, it helps to consider the themes that can shape your stay: wine tastings, railway heritage, heritage sites and scenic flights. Think about whether you would rather spend your time exploring wine, local history or a flight experience. The differences are tangible: one tasting room is in a historic shepherd’s hut, while the railway station and water tank tell the story of steam railways.

Wine Tastings and the History of Winemaking

At Lethbridge Wines, relaxed wine tastings are part of the offering, often with the winemaker in attendance. The Cellar Door offers three different tasting experiences. As tasting options and packages may change, check the current offering before your visit. This gives you a specific point of reference if a tasting is an important part of your travel plans.

Moorabool Ridge Vineyard & Cafe complements the wine theme with a tasting room in a shepherd’s hut built in 1856. Compared with Lethbridge Wines, the historic building itself also shapes the tasting experience here.

The history of winemaking can also be placed in context: the Flagship Vineyard in Lethbridge was established by Swiss immigrants in 1874 and replanted by Maree and Ray in 1996. Its establishment and subsequent replanting are two clearly distinct milestones in its history.

Railway Station and Steam Railway

Lethbridge Railway Station served passengers, farmers and local industries. Wool, grain and livestock were transported through it to regional markets. Today, the station is closed and is an important part of Lethbridge’s heritage.

The Lethbridge Railway Water Tank is a significant relic of the Victorian steam railway era. It once served as an important water stop for locomotives. The tank stored water from local reserves and the Moorabool River to supply steam locomotives. The former tank was built in the 1860s from riveted cast-iron plates and stands on a rectangular basalt base that housed the pumping station. The two railway facilities had different functions: the station served passenger and freight traffic, while the water tank supplied steam locomotives.

Heritage and Architectural History

Moranghurk Homestead in Lethbridge is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. It is considered to be of outstanding significance and a rare example of early Australian colonial style. The building was constructed using vertical timber slabs with cover strips; this type of cover strip is otherwise unknown in Victoria. St Mary's Catholic Church is designated as a heritage site in Lethbridge.

Scenic Flights at Lethbridge Airport

Scenic flights and a flight school are available at Lethbridge Airport. Joy Flights Melbourne operates there and offers scenic flights in restored Tiger Moths and a CT4 RAAF Airtrainer. The availability of scenic flights and the aircraft mentioned may change; check the current offering before booking. This offers a different kind of experience alongside wine and railway history: a scenic flight instead of exploring a building or a piece of infrastructure from the past.
