Mount Macedon brings together historic gardens and memorial sites with walking trails and natural attractions. If you’re looking for a hotel in Mount Macedon, the focus of your trip can help with planning: would you like to explore gardens and art, or are you especially interested in trails and landscapes? The places below offer a range of inspiration.

Gardens, History and Art

Forest Glade Gardens is located on the southern slopes of Mount Macedon. This historic private garden is almost 100 years old. Duneira Estate offers another historic connection: the property is an original colonial hill station and a large garden on Mount Macedon. Its 38 acres include extensive gardens, chestnut groves and an apple orchard. The estate also includes original outbuildings and a gatekeeper’s lodge.

Art is also part of the cultural offering: The Gallery at Mt Macedon is run by a collective of local artists. Exhibited works include paintings, woodwork, textiles, glasswork, ceramics, jewellery, photography, origami and mosaics. Viewfield is a private garden on a ten-acre property in the centre of Mount Macedon. Its visiting hours are seasonal, so check dates to suit your trip.

Mount Macedon Memorial Cross stands at the summit. The 21-metre-high cross commemorates everyone who has served in wars and conflicts. The paved path leading to it is suitable for visitors with limited mobility; however, there are steps at the foot of the cross. If accessibility is important to your plans, keep both details in mind.

Trails, Summits and Nature

Sanatorium Lake has self-guided walking and horse-riding trails. The audio-guided Murmuring Walk is about 2.5 kilometres long and passes through tall eucalyptus forests and a damp gully with tree ferns. The lakeside trail also connects to the 29-kilometre Macedon Ranges Walking Trail. The two distances refer to different trails: the Murmuring Walk is about 2.5 kilometres long; the 29 kilometres describes the connected Macedon Ranges Walking Trail.

At 1,011 metres, Camel’s Hump is the highest peak in the Macedon Ranges and offers views of the surrounding landscape. The ascent to the summit on Mount Macedon climbs 500 metres and leads to an ancient rock outcrop. So, if you’re comparing walks, the focus here is on different landscape views than at Sanatorium Lake. Visitors can also go walking in Memorial Cross Reserve.

Stanley Park adds a hidden, medium-sized natural waterfall to the nature attractions. The park also has several picnic areas and a small playground. This makes it easy to distinguish the nature spots by what they offer: views and a summit at Camel’s Hump, trails by the lake, and a waterfall and places to relax at Stanley Park.

Planning Your Visit

Dicksonia Rare Plants is a nursery in the centre of the Mount Macedon community. More than 2,000 different rare plants are available there. The range and business details may change, so check the latest information before visiting. Viewfield has different opening arrangements: the private garden opens seasonally. If you’re planning to visit several of these places, check their individual visiting conditions for your travel dates.
