Trentham can be explored through several distinct themes: railway heritage, local history, walking and cycling trails, and chocolate and produce from the surrounding region. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are more interested in historic sites, an outdoor route or local food. The experiences also differ in their timing: some relate to past uses, while others depend on dates and changing visitor offerings.

Railway Heritage and Local History

Trentham’s railway station dates from the 1880s and is one of the few surviving stations on Victoria’s branch-line network. It is on the former Carlsruhe to Daylesford line. The Trentham Rail and Tramway Association (TRATA) manages, maintains and preserves the station grounds, including the historic railway vehicles on display there.

The Domino Trail starts at the old railway station; information panels there share details about the region’s railway heritage. As a rail trail, it connects Trentham and Lyonville. The route is six kilometres each way and can be used for walking and cycling.

The Old Police Complex comprises five portable weatherboard buildings that served as the town’s police station from 1866 to 1987. The complex includes police memorabilia and local history displays, including exhibits about the Trewhella Foundry, Dr Gwen Wisewould and the region’s potato industry. The Trentham District Story offers another perspective: this outdoor installation features twelve double-sided information panels about the Indigenous and European history of the Trentham area.

Waterfalls and Trails Around Trentham

Trentham Falls is nearby. The waterfall has the highest single drop in Central Victoria. For a different view of the landscape, the Wombat Trail passes through several reserves: it connects Quarry Street Reserve, Stoney Creek Reserve and Bath Street Reserve in town with the former Trentham Racecourse Reserve in Wombat State Forest.

The Wombat Trail starts and ends at Quarry Street Reserve. It is described as an easy, nine-kilometre walking trail, with an approximate walking time of two hours. Route conditions can change, so it is advisable to check the current conditions before setting out. The Domino Trail, by contrast, focuses on the connection to Lyonville, the distance each way and the option to cycle as well as walk.

Chocolate and Regional Produce

In the centre of Trentham, Sisko Chocolate Studio is an artisanal chocolate studio and experience. Bookable hands-on workshops include truffle making, shaping chocolate flowers, premium moulding classes and seasonal decoration classes. Many experiences may include a bean-to-bar tasting that explains chocolate’s journey from its origins to the finished product. The range of workshops and tastings can change; check what is on offer during your visit in advance.

The Trentham Farmers' Market is held on the third Saturday of each month at the Town Square and showcases fresh, seasonal produce from the surrounding region. Market dates and schedules can change, so check them before your visit. During Spudfest weekend, Spudfeast is a potato-themed experience featuring special potato-based dishes from local vendors in Trentham and the surrounding region. The programme may change.
