Wesburn offers two distinct ways to plan your visit: its mountain bike trails and the sporting and local history of Wesburn Park. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you’re mainly interested in the trail layout or the local context. The routes differ in their circuit format and course; the park offers a look at both its current uses and past sporting events.

Which bike route suits your interests?

The Wesburn Shorty is an easy-rated circuit and is suitable for people who are new to the bike park. It connects Rubber Stamp, Bitta This Bitta That and Zinglefun. The circuit format and three specific trail names are part of what characterises this route. For beginners at the bike park, the easy rating is a useful guide. Current trail conditions may vary, so check them before your ride.

The Wesburn to Warburton Loop follows a different course. As part of a route between Wesburn and Warburton, the described section follows a flowing descent on Hop Scotch to Dolly Grey Reserve in Warburton. There, it briefly follows the Rail Trail before climbing Uptown Flow. This means the route alternates between a descent, a short stretch on the Rail Trail and the subsequent climb. When choosing, you can consider whether you prefer the Shorty’s circuit format or this combination of descent and climb.

Wesburn Park: past and present uses

Today, Wesburn Park is used for Australian football, cricket, school sports days, pony club events and general neighbourhood recreation. Its activities range from sports to school and community events. If you’re interested in a specific event, check its date in advance.

The park’s past uses also tell the story of its sporting history. The Upper Yarra Racing Club held picnic races there from around 1930 to 1963. Other past uses included tennis, basketball and netball. The picnic races mark an approximate historical period; the ball sports mentioned are also among the park’s former uses. These can be compared with the activities described today. This gives you the opportunity to explore Wesburn Park through both its history and its current uses.

Place names with a history

Wesburn was formerly known as Warburton West and includes the historic localities of Britannia Creek and Old Warburton. These place names add historical context to the current name. Together with the history of Wesburn Park, they offer another way to get to know the area beyond its bike routes: you can explore Wesburn through its trail layouts, former names and the park’s different uses.
