Zagersdorf: Wine Hiking Trail and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Zagersdorf
Zagersdorf combines wine history with sacred art and other historical traces. The connection to wine is particularly evident on the wine hiking trail and at the burial mounds in the Urbarial Forest. Other cultural themes of the village include the Tamburica Zagersdorf, the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Cross, wayside shrines, and the Roman road. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Zagersdorf, you can first consider whether you are particularly interested in wine history, music, or historic buildings and artworks.
Wine Hiking Trail and Archaeological Wine History
The Zagersdorf Winegrowers’ Association created the wine hiking trail. It runs for 3.5 kilometres through vineyards and is considered Austria’s first bilingual wine hiking trail: its two languages are German and Croatian. The route thus combines winegrowing with the linguistic and cultural diversity that also plays a role in the music of the Tamburica Zagersdorf.
The burial mounds in the Zagersdorf Urbarial Forest are among the archaeological evidence of wine history. Grape pips of the “Vitis Fini Fera Vinifera” grape variety were found in a clay vessel in one of the mounds. This variety resembles Grüner Sylvaner. The find establishes a tangible connection between the village and the history of winegrowing: it is not only about today’s vineyards, but also about an archaeological find from a burial mound.
A grape seed enlarged 1,000 times has been installed at the find site. The burial mounds themselves have been designed as a historic wine memorial and are protected as a nature reserve. The find, enlargement, and memorial each emphasize different aspects: the grape-pip find points to archaeology, the enlarged model turns the seed into a designed object, and the wine memorial connects the burial mounds with the subject of wine.
Music and Burgenland Croatian Tradition
The Tamburica Zagersdorf was founded in 1971. Its music preserves the customs and language of the Burgenland Croats. Those interested in Zagersdorf’s cultural side will find a connection to living musical tradition alongside its archaeological and architectural heritage. These themes complement one another without telling the same part of the village’s history: the wine hiking trail passes through vineyards, while the Tamburica focuses on tradition and language.
Chapel and Wayside Shrines
The Chapel of the Exaltation of the Cross in the Großgebirge is a simple rectangular building with a gabled roof. Its altarpiece dates from 1727 and depicts Christ with the cross. The building’s form and the image’s subject offer two different points of interest: on the one hand, its simple architectural design is described; on the other, its dated religious painting. The year refers to the altarpiece.
Another sacred motif is the figurative wayside shrine known as the “Holy Trinity Pillar.” Its design features a tall pillar, a lily capital, and a Throne of Mercy group on a band of clouds. The lily capital and the Throne of Mercy group on a band of clouds are located at the top of the pillar. This clearly distinguishes the wayside shrine’s form from the rectangular chapel.
The figurative wayside shrine known as the “Bell Madonna” is located at Hauptstraße 76 in Zagersdorf. The heritage register dated June 19, 2026, lists it as a protected monument. Together with the Holy Trinity Pillar, it offers another point of interest for sacred visual art; for the Bell Madonna shrine, the precise address is also part of its location information.
Historical Traces in the Landscape
Near Zagersdorf, the Roman road from Scarbantia (Sopron-Ă–denburg) to Vindobona (Vienna) is still well preserved. The two endpoints locate the historic connection between the present-day cities of Sopron and Vienna; the description of its condition refers to the road near Zagersdorf. Together with the wine hiking trail, it offers a distinct connection to the landscape: one runs for 3.5 kilometres through vineyards, while the other is a historic road linking the stated endpoints.
When planning your trip, you can choose between different points of interest: the wine hiking trail, the archaeological sites of the Urbarial Forest, the musical tradition, or the chapels and wayside shrines. If you would like to combine these themes with a stay in Zagersdorf, you can look for a suitable hotel for your trip.
