Neudörfl: Culture, History and Swimming Lake
Accommodation in Neudörfl
Neudörfl combines cultural and seminar life with a layered local history, a swimming lake, and regional hiking and culinary attractions. If you are looking for a hotel in Neudörfl, you can choose according to the purpose of your visit: historic sites, a cultural event or seminar, time by the water, or a tour of the region. The following topics can help you decide what to focus on during your stay before comparing offers.
Culture and History in Neudörfl
Bors Villa is housed in the former villa of the Bors family and serves as a cultural and seminar centre. It is available for seminars and exhibitions, subject to availability. If a seminar or exhibition is the reason for your trip, check availability in advance.
The Parish Church of the Nativity of Mary was built in 1685, replacing a smaller church built in 1669 that burned down in 1683 during the Turkish Wars. The former high altar painting survived the fire and now forms the centrepiece of the new painting in the chancel. This connects the church’s construction history with the surviving painting.
Archaeological evidence traces Neudörfl’s history back to the Neolithic period: settlement remains show that the area now covered by the municipality was inhabited around 7,000 years ago. Later historical milestones span several centuries: the Battle of the Leitha took place within the municipality in 1246, and the founding congress of Austrian Social Democracy was held in Neudörfl in 1874. A plaque commemorating Rudolf Steiner was placed on the railway station building in 1951; he had lived there for ten years.
The architectural heritage also includes the former Leitha inn with mill, built in 1650 at the behest of the village’s founder, Count Nikolaus Esterhazy. The border guard’s cottage was restored through a private initiative in the 1990s and now recalls the former border crossing.
Hiking and Time at the Swimming Lake
One hiking event with a specific date is the Martini hike organised by the Neudörfl Hiking Club: it took place for the 52nd time on 20 October 2024. Its 11-kilometre route led past the Katzelsdorf flood retention basin to Sauerbründl, past the Hubertus Chapel, and on to the Fleischhackerkreuz. The Rosalia Genuss Tour also passes through Neudörfl and, thanks to its short distances, is suitable for e-bikes. This gives you different hiking options: a dated event with a specified route, and a trail explicitly described as suitable for e-bikes.
Neudörfl swimming lake covers around 3 hectares and is up to 17 metres deep. Seasonal opening hours are listed for the swimming lake from May to September: in May and June, 09:00–19:00; in July and August, 09:00–19:30; and in September, 09:00–18:00. The longest listed opening hours are in July and August. Check the hours for your travel dates before setting out.
Regional Cuisine
The region also has a specific culinary connection: the vineyards of the Steiger wine tavern lie around Neudörfl, in the heart of the Rosalia region. At the Steiger wine tavern, “sour turnips” are prepared according to a time-honoured recipe. If you are planning your trip with food in mind, these details complement the historical and landscape attractions with a named culinary tradition.
