Horitschon combines trails through the vineyards with a strong wine culture. This gives you various options when planning your trip: a walk along the Blaufränkisch Trail, a look at the landscape and—if your timing is right—tastings or seasonal wine events.

Vineyards, views and landscape

Horitschon lies at the beginning of the Pannonian lowlands, not in mountainous terrain. The village is in a sheltered location south of the Ödenburg Mountains. The mild Pannonian climate is influenced by nearby Lake Neusiedl; Mediterranean and continental influences intermingle.

The Blaufränkisch Trail is a circular hiking trail through Horitschon’s Hochäcker and Dürrau vineyards. The clubhouse at Kirchenplatz is named as the starting point. The view from Blaufränkischblick also takes in Hochäcker and Dürrau. From the platform, you can enjoy a 360-degree view at any time of day.

Taste wines and discover producer profiles

Kohlmann’s tasting room in Horitschon offers tastings of fine spirits and liqueurs. Tastings are by advance booking and can last around three to four hours, depending on the programme and group size. A tour of the distillery may be included; a regional snack is available on request. If you plan this activity, allow for the variable duration and book in advance.

The wine producers each have a different focus. At Eichenwald Weine, red wines make up 90 percent of the range, led by Blaufränkisch. Eichenwald Weine is also an event venue with up to 1,000 oak barrels. The Moritz family has been making wine in Horitschon for over 60 years. Bioweingut Moritz has been fully organic since 2006 and grows only Blaufränkisch and Blauer Zweigelt on around three hectares. IBY Rotweingut also grows only red grape varieties, with a focus on Blaufränkisch. This means that a predominantly red wine range sits alongside producers that grow exclusively red grape varieties; the profiles described offer different insights into Horitschon’s focus on red wine.

RotweinOpening and RotweinHerbst

The recurring Horitschoner RotweinOpening takes place at the end of May and features open cellar doors. Visitors can taste fine wines straight from the barrel, and the participating wineries present their current ranges. The Horitschoner RotweinHerbst begins at the end of October; this event also features barrel tastings and the current ranges of the participating wineries. When choosing a date, the main difference is the calendar: the end-of-May event versus the autumn event starting at the end of October. Check the specific event dates before your trip.

Church and local history

Horitschon parish church was built from 1947 to 1949 and is dedicated to Saint Margaret. An archaeological find reveals a much earlier chapter in the village’s history: in 1933, a particularly richly furnished Roman villa rustica, which also had underfloor heating, was excavated at Teichäckern.
