Bernstein: Nature, Precious Serpentine and Castle
Accommodation in Bernstein
Bernstein offers nature, swimming and cultural history as different focal points for a trip. If you are looking for a hotel in Bernstein, you can first consider which of these aspects matters most for your stay. Hikes, the natural swimming pool, precious serpentine and the castle offer specific starting points for planning—from outdoor activities to art and architectural history.
Hiking and Swimming
Bernstein is a popular starting point for hikes in the Geschriebenstein–Írottkő Nature Park. One themed route is the Bernstein Planet Trail: Over 5.5 kilometres, it depicts the sun and its eight planets at a scale of 1:1.1 billion, accurately representing their relative sizes and distances. Sizes and distances follow the same scale principle; the trail thus combines hiking with a scale representation of the planets. This gives you two different starting points for planning: hikes in the nature park and a route with an astronomy theme and a specified length.
The Bernstein natural swimming pool is supplied exclusively with spring water. It has a 750 m² swimming area for swimmers, non-swimmers and small children. Facilities also include a beach volleyball court, a bathing area for small children, bathing platforms, a shallow, gravel-covered shore access and a water slide. When planning, you can choose between the listed swimmer groups and the additional features of the bathing area.
Precious Serpentine at the Rock Museum
At the Bernstein Rock Museum, multilingual electronic information boards guide visitors through the individual museum areas and explain the many exhibits. The precious serpentine collection includes a mosaic vase made from more than 500 differently translucent pieces of precious serpentine. The vase was awarded a gold medal at the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels. It offers a specific look at the material and its design, while the information boards explain the other exhibits and museum areas.
At the precious serpentine workshop at the Rock Museum, participants can make a piece of jewellery or a worry stone from raw precious serpentine under expert supervision. This offers a practical way to work with the material alongside viewing items in the collection. As workshop arrangements may change, please check the dates in advance. Telephone reservations are requested to visit the Habetler precious serpentine workshop in Bernstein. Please confirm by phone before your visit, as the relevant information may change.
Bernstein Castle and Church Services
Bernstein Castle was first mentioned in 1236. The castle complex includes fortifications, a castle garden, a chapel and a Renaissance ballroom. The castle offers views of the Hungarian Plain and southern Styria. Its first mention provides a historical reference, while the listed structures and the view add architectural and landscape perspectives.
Sunday church services are held at 9:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Church in Bernstein. As current service times may change, please check the schedule before your visit.
