This gives you a chance to decide in advance whether cultural history, nature or outdoor activities should be the focus of your stay. The following places and activities offer different starting points.

Culture and History in Albeck

The Wegscheiderkreuz in Albeck Obere Schattseite stands out for its architectural details: it has a wooden back wall and a gabled roof covered with wooden shingles, with curved bargeboards. It also features a cast-iron figure of Christ. These individual elements make the cross a specific destination for anyone interested in small religious monuments and their design.

The Sirnitz Mill is also located within the municipality. It has been a working watermill since 1997 and is still in use. On designated milling days, visitors can watch demonstrations and join guided tours; advance registration with the local mill association is required. If you would like to plan a visit, factor registration into your choice of date.

The Albeck Ruins lie in the wider area around Albeck. This historically significant structure was built as a castle in the 10th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1155. The two dates refer to different points in its history: its construction and its first documented mention. A visit to the ruins can therefore also be combined with an interest in the early history of the area.

Natural Monuments and Hiking Trails

The 1,000-year-old larch stands near Hochwiditsch, within the municipality of Albeck. Its trunk circumference is more than 8 metres. The Wetterlärche, or Weather Larch, near Hochwiditsch was also placed under nature protection as early as 1967. Both examples draw attention to natural monuments distinguished by their size or protected status.

The municipality has more than 200 kilometres of marked trails for hiking. They lead to viewpoints, natural monuments, churches and ruins. One specific suggestion is the Kneipp Hiking Trail: it runs from Sirnitz for around 1.5 kilometres into the Enge Gurk gorge, to a small waterfall. This gives you a choice between a single route with a named destination and a larger network of trails leading to different kinds of places.

Hochrindl in Winter

Hochrindl has 20 kilometres of ski runs with views across Carinthia. As the season and operations may change, it is advisable to check the details before travelling. If you prefer to get around on foot, there is also a walking path from the car park on Hochrindl to the Anderle Cross. The route is 3 kilometres long; winter preparations may vary depending on snow conditions.

At the Hochrindl ski school, you can rent snowshoes and poles by prior arrangement. Check the rental details before travelling as well. Another hike, “Hiking in the Realm of King Forest Spirit”, starts and ends at the Herzl Hut in Hochrindl. Admission arrangements may change seasonally, so check the current conditions before visiting.

For regional context, Sirnitz-Hochrindl is situated in the Nockberge nature and landscape conservation area. This designation adds the perspective of a protected landscape to the individual attractions on Hochrindl.

Local Offerings and Getting There

Christina Kranz offers herbal workshops within the municipality of Albeck. Dates and booking options may change, so check the latest information in advance. Schloss Albeck Restaurant serves local fish dishes such as trout, char and Carinthian Laxn. The fish comes from the local Hammer organic fish farm at the foot of the castle hill. As restaurant and sourcing details may change, check them before planning a specific visit.

Albeck can be reached via the Gurk Valley on roads B 94 and B 93, or from Feldkirchen via B 93. These roads offer two route options; the one you choose depends on your direction of travel. When planning your stay, you can match the route to the interests that matter most to you: for example, the mill and historic landmarks, the hiking trails or the seasonal offerings on Hochrindl.
