When exploring Koprein Petzen, different interests take center stage: the history of the Peršmanhof, the Union Church at Luschasattel, and hiking and leisure opportunities at Luschaalm and on Petzen. Specific information about historic sites, walking times and seasonal activities can help you choose the focus for your stay.

Peršmanhof and Partisan Memorial

At the Peršmanhof, eleven members of the Sadovnik and Kogoj families were shot by members of SS and Police Regiment 13 on April 25, 1945. According to the Austrian monument register dated June 19, 2026, the Partisan Memorial at Koprein Petzen 3 in Eisenkappel-Vellach is a protected monument.

The sculptural group of the Partisan Memorial stands in front of the Peršmanhof Museum. It depicts three advancing partisans, two men and a woman, and was erected there in 1983. The date of the crime and the year the sculptural group was erected refer to different historical points in time. This helps put the history of the site into context without conflating the event with the memorial erected later.

Union Church at Luschasattel

Another cultural and historical site is the Union Church at Luschasattel. It was built for all religions, and its construction was initiated by Florian Sadovnik as a private undertaking. The church stands right at Luschasattel, slightly above the Peršmanhof, and is located in the Luschaalm area near Koprein-Petzen. This identifies both its immediate location at the saddle and its position in the Luschaalm area.

Hiking: Walking Times and Elevation Gain

Two hikes can be compared by walking time to help you choose a specific route. The “Pod Peco/Koprein Petzen – Kordeževa glava (Peca)” route is 8.50 km long, takes about four hours and is classified as an easy marked trail. The easy hike from Luschaalm to Feistritzer Spitze takes three hours. It starts at 1,250 m, reaches 2,114 m and has an elevation gain of 864 m.

The three-hour walk to Feistritzer Spitze can therefore be compared with the approximate four-hour duration of the 8.50 km route. The Luschaalm hike also includes its starting and ending elevations as well as the elevation gain; for the route via Kordeževa glava, the length and difficulty rating are among the stated reference details. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Carinthian Border Trail

The Carinthian Border Trail was marked in 1985 and circles Carinthia in 45 daily stages. Its route leads to Riepl on Luschaalm near Koprein-Petzen and then follows trail no. 603 in the direction of Feistritzer Spitze. This offers a different way of planning than the individual hikes with their own walking times: the Border Trail is described by its stages and its route toward Feistritzer Spitze.

Luschaalm and Petzen: Views and Seasonal Activities

The Alpengasthof Riepl is located on Luschaalm at 1,200 m at the foot of Topitza and offers distant views as well as archery. The “Bogenschießen Luscha Alm” 3D course, with 28 life-size targets, starts at Alpengasthof Riepl, Koprein 6, 9135 Bad Eisenkappel. If you plan to visit this place or the course, check before you travel whether the inn is currently open.

The time of year may also influence your choice of activities: in winter, Petzen offers opportunities for skiing and ski touring. After the snow melts, hiking, mountain biking and paragliding are possible activities. The Petzen massif is characterized by steep rock faces, flowering alpine meadows and extensive stands of mountain pine.
