Malta offers several highlights to consider when planning your trip: an exceptionally high dam, a road route with tunnels and hairpin bends, waterfalls, a themed trail, an animal park and a historic church building. To help you choose, it is useful to distinguish between these attractions: are you mainly interested in nature, the road route, encounters with animals or culture? The differences below offer specific points of reference to help you decide which focus should shape your stay.

Kölnbreinsperre and Malta High Alpine Road

At 200 metres, the Kölnbreinsperre is Austria’s highest dam. The 14.4-kilometre Malta High Alpine Road passes through rock tunnels carved into the stone and around hairpin bends, past roaring waterfalls, to the dam. The road and the dam thus offer two distinct points of interest for trip planning: the route described and the structure’s height. Visitors can take a guided tour of the dam at the Kölnbreinsperre. Check availability before your trip if you would like to plan on taking the tour.

Waterfalls and themed trail

The Malteiner Wasserspiele nature trail leads into the striking gorge and waterfall landscape of the Hinteres Maltatal. The themed trail has 18 stops and ends at the Blauer Tumpf in Schönau. The stops and endpoint make clear that the focus here is on a trail with a set route, not just on a single waterfall. The Blauer Tumpf can be reached via the Malta High Alpine Road; road conditions may vary, so take this into account when planning your trip.

The waterfalls differ in shape and height. The Melnikfall cascades down several rock ledges for around 300 metres, while the Fallbach waterfall plunges into the depths over a rock face almost 200 metres high. The distinction therefore lies not only in their height but also in their form: the Melnikfall’s ledges and the Fallbach’s rock face.

Activities with different focuses

The Fallbach via ferrata is recommended only for experienced via ferrata climbers. Keep this experience level in mind when planning your trip. The Maltatal Donkey Park offers a different type of activity: it is home to more than 100 animals of various breeds, is open to visitors on foot and is suitable for wheelchair users. Visitors can pet the animals, and adventurous children can try riding. The donkey park focuses on contact with animals and a possible activity for children, while the recommended experience level is the key consideration when choosing the via ferrata.

A historical perspective on Malta

The parish church of Malta was built between the 13th and 15th centuries. This construction period, spanning several centuries, adds a historical perspective to the nature and engineering themes. If you want to include culture in your trip planning alongside waterfalls and the dam, the church offers a clear point of interest.
