Stampfen: Hiking Trails and Events
Accommodation in Stampfen
Stampfen is a hamlet in the municipality of Mörtschach. Several hiking trails include the hamlet in different ways: the Stampfen footpath, the Stampfen circular hiking trail, and Stage 3 of the Alpe-Adria-Trail. A mountain hike from the Wangenitzseehütte to Mörtschach also reaches the first mountain farms in the district. When choosing your route, it is worth paying attention to the trail route, surface, and the direction specified for each trail.
Hiking and Trail Routes
The Stampfen footpath first follows an asphalt road, then continues along a small hiking trail to the vicinity of Gasthof Schwaiger. The change in surface is part of the route; the inn’s location is a named landmark. Since local trail surfaces can change, it is advisable to check the conditions before setting out.
Stage 3 of the Alpe-Adria-Trail follows the Glocknerradweg to the hamlet of Stampfen in the municipality of Mörtschach. In Stampfen, the stage leaves the cycle path. Also in Stampfen, the Möll is crossed via a wooden bridge; immediately after the Möll bridge, the road is crossed. After Stampfen, the stage continues to Mörtschach along a meadow trail, partly on wooden walkways. This makes it possible to distinguish the different sections of the stage: the Glocknerradweg to Stampfen, the crossings in the hamlet, and then the meadow trail and wooden walkways toward Mörtschach. Check trail markers and conditions before setting off; weather events can change conditions at the bridge.
The Stampfen circular hiking trail starts at the Guggenberger circular trail and leads toward Mörtschach. From Stampfen to the center of Mörtschach, a mountain hike follows either the asphalt mountain road or signposted footpaths. Unlike the meadow trails and wooden walkways on Stage 3, the routes specified here are the asphalt road or the signposted footpaths; the center of Mörtschach is also named as the destination. Conditions on the circular trail can change seasonally, so it is a good idea to check them before setting out.
The mountain hike “Descent from the Wangenitzseehütte to Mörtschach” reaches the first mountain farms in the district of Stampfen. This means that Stampfen is also reached on a descent from the Wangenitzseehütte to Mörtschach. On Stage 3 of the Alpe-Adria-Trail, by contrast, the trail continues from Stampfen to Mörtschach. These directions help you distinguish between the different hiking routes, rather than interpreting them as a single route.
Traditions and Events
A report from 2022 describes an annual procession at Pentecost to the Moarskapelle in the Pirkach-Stampfen area. If you would like to include this tradition in your travel plans, check the date for the relevant year in advance. This lets you match the seasonal reference to Pentecost with the specific event date.
Sportunion Mörtschach organizes ice stock tournaments, sled races, children’s tractor races, small-sided football tournaments, and giant table football tournaments. If you are interested in any of these types of competitions, check the relevant date when planning your trip.
