Activities in Techendorf
Techendorf is the centre of Lake Weissensee. There are several activities to choose from when planning your trip: the “Water and Land” wet meadow hike, the Weissensee mountain railway, a guided exploration of the lake and a mountain bike route. Depending on whether you want to explore on foot, take the railway uphill, discover the lake with a guide or plan a mountain bike ride, you can focus on different activities.
Hikes: starting points and duration
The “Water and Land” wet meadow hike starts in Techendorf-Süd, in the bridge area on the southern promenade path, and ends in Praditz at the parking area opposite the petrol station. The start and finish are in different places, so this is not a circular hike. When planning your day, these two points are key to fitting the route into your schedule.
By contrast, the RW_W12 Techendorf–Franz Josefs Höhe circular trail is 8.5 kilometres long and takes 2.3 hours. The planning information differs: “Water and Land” follows a route between two named places, while RW_W12 is described by the length and duration of a circular route. This distinction is useful if you are looking for a loop with a stated duration.
Mountain railway and hikes from the mountain station
The Weissensee mountain railway takes visitors on a modern four-seat chairlift from the valley station on the lake’s southwestern shore, at an elevation of 956 metres, to the mountain station at 1,324 metres in twelve minutes. From the mountain station, visitors can access hikes to Naggler Alm and Kohlröslhütte. For planning purposes, the twelve-minute figure refers to the journey between the stations; the hikes are separate activities. The railway operates seasonally. Check the dates for your travel period if taking the railway uphill is part of your plans.
Guided tour on the lake
The “Taster Tour across the Lake” lets you explore the lake with a guide by kayak, Hobie or stand-up paddleboard. The meeting point is the Waterpoint by the bridge in Techendorf. The activity is seasonal; check the current dates in advance before making the tour a fixed part of your travel plans. This lets you fit the guided outing into your stay, taking the meeting point and seasonal dates into account.
Mountain biking and activities in the centre
The W1–Franz Josefs Höhe mountain bike route starts at the Weissensee Haus in Techendorf. If you are planning a mountain bike ride, this gives you a specific starting point.

These local options complement the tours and trails described above when planning your trip.
