Sankt Andrä is situated on a river terrace above the Lavant in the Lavant Valley. If you are weighing up a stay that combines sacred buildings, local history and outdoor trails, you will find a variety of themes here. The churches tell the story of the town’s religious history, while historic evidence and signposted trails offer further perspectives for your planning.

Churches and history in Sankt Andrä

The cathedral church is considered one of the oldest churches in the Lavant Valley. Inside, remnants of 15th- and 16th-century frescoes depict the crucifixion of Jesus. Notable gravestones of bishops and provosts of the Diocese of Lavant are also found here. These details highlight different aspects: the frescoes depict a subject and date from two centuries, while the gravestones are associated with representatives of the diocese.

Maria Loreto is a pilgrimage and wedding church dating from the 17th century. Since 21 July 2014, the pilgrimage church has been Carinthia’s second Basilica minor, alongside Maria Luggau. For your orientation, the two churches are associated with different historical details: the date of Maria Loreto’s elevation is precisely specified, while the cathedral church is notable, among other things, for its frescoes and gravestones.

Other historical evidence also adds to the picture of the town’s history. The Tränktor is the last surviving historic entrance in Sankt Andrä. A document dated 18 April 1339 attests to fortifications with a wall and moat. The history of Sankt Andrä is presented in the “Raum der Geschichte” (“History Room”) exhibition space, primarily through exhibits owned by the municipality. Alongside the churches, there is thus a surviving gate, a dated written record and an exhibition featuring local artefacts.

Trails with different themes

The panoramic tour passes through the town centre and features 15 unique interactive stations. The St. Andrä Panorama Trail traces the history from the first settlement to the present day across 14 steles. At each of these 14 steles, visitors can use the “Cultural Places” mobile app to learn about the town and its surroundings. The two trail descriptions therefore have different emphases: the panoramic tour is defined by its interactive stations in the town centre, while the Panorama Trail focuses on the historical arc from the first settlement to the present day.

The signposted Kneipp circular trail starts at the cathedral church, passes through the “Verbotene Gärten” (“Forbidden Gardens”) and returns to its starting point. Allow about an hour for the loop, plus time spent at the Kneipp stations. This estimate helps you factor in extra time at the stations when planning your day.

The St. Andrä Bee Nature Trail is another circular route. It starts at the St. Andräer See recreation area and is 5.5 kilometres long. The recreation area is a swimming destination directly on the Lavantradweg cycle route. Check the facility’s seasonal operating conditions before you travel. This makes it easier to decide whether to focus on a circular trail with Kneipp stations or the longer bee trail when planning your visit.

A festival as a seasonal reason to visit

Gackern is a recurring festival in Sankt Andrä. Its 26th edition is scheduled for 2027. Visitors can enjoy chicken and turkey specialities at the Loretowiese. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates for that edition in advance. This lets you consider the culinary event as a distinct focus of your stay, alongside the churches, local history and trails.
