Oberwaltersdorf: Discover culture and cycling
Accommodation in Oberwaltersdorf
Oberwaltersdorf offers a range of points of interest to help you plan your trip: historic buildings and industrial heritage, the Triestingau Cycle Path, and leisure activities around the bathing lake and the FONTANA Golf Club. You can tailor your stay to the subjects that interest you most.
Buildings and local history
A directory entry dated June 23, 2026, lists the former synagogue building at Badener Straße 13 and Oberwaltersdorf Castle with its granary as protected historic buildings under § 3, pursuant to an official ruling. According to a regulation, the Catholic parish church of St. James the Elder is also protected. The Visintini footbridge is protected under a regulation as well. The castle was restored by honorary citizen Wilfried Schnedl.
The parish church is dedicated to St. James the Elder. Its earliest documented reference dates to 1252: this is the earliest recorded mention, not necessarily the date of the present church building. The Old Spinning Mill, meanwhile, is one of the few industrial monuments in Lower Austria to have survived in almost its original condition. Together, these places reveal different facets of Oberwaltersdorf’s history, from religious heritage to industrial architecture.
The story of Broncia Koller can also be traced at several locations. The Oberwaltersdorf local history museum is housed in the feather factory, and its focus is on researching the painter. From 1912/13, parts of an industrial complex served as Koller’s studio and residence. Josef Hoffmann designed the extension to the Koller buildings. The Koller House, a separate site, represents its own chapter in cultural history: it became a meeting place for Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, Egon Schiele, and other figures from Viennese society. The house is privately owned.
The Europe Fountain stands on Kirchenplatz and was erected in September 1997. It contains a stone from each EU member state. The dates refer to different events: 1252 is the earliest documented mention of the parish church, 1912/13 marks the historical use of parts of an industrial complex by Broncia Koller, and 1997 is the year the fountain was erected.
Cycling, floodplain landscapes, and leisure
The Triestingau Cycle Path runs through Oberwaltersdorf. Its description mentions flat paths along the Triesting through a largely natural floodplain. A floodplain landscape stretches along the river to the west and north of the town. These offer two distinct points of reference for planning your trip: the designated cycle path and the landscape described along the Triesting.
Oberwaltersdorf bathing lake is a 0.5-hectare lake surrounded by a large sunbathing lawn and shade-providing trees. Facilities include beach volleyball and giant chess. So, alongside local history, there are specific leisure activities to consider; the details about the lake are clearly distinct from the route features of the cycle path.
Another sporting option is the FONTANA Golf Club, with its 18-hole championship course. The course hosted the European Tour in Austria from 2006 to 2009. These tournament years describe its role at the time and should be distinguished from current information about the golf club. The clubhouse has a restaurant and a pro shop.
Travel connections
Public transport connections from Oberwaltersdorf include the Aspang Railway between Vienna, Wiener Neustadt, and Aspang, as well as bus routes between Baden, Wiener Neustadt, and Deutsch Brodersdorf. If you are planning to travel by public transport, check the latest timetables before setting off.
When choosing a destination, you can weigh the different highlights against one another: the cultural history ranges from the parish church and castle to the area’s industrial heritage and the story of Koller; the cycle path, floodplain landscape, bathing lake, and golf club add nature and sports to the mix.
