Accommodation in Schönau an der Triesting
Schönau an der Triesting offers a range of cultural and nature-related topics to consider when planning a trip: the history of Johann Strauß, the Schlosspark, the Schönauer Teich, and opportunities for hiking and cycling. If you are looking for a hotel in Schönau an der Triesting, you can plan your trip around whether musical history, historic gardens, nature or outdoor activities are your priority.
Johann Strauß and local history
The Schönau an der Triesting local history museum explores the history of the town and the everyday lives of its residents. A particular focus is the composer Johann Strauß (1825–1899). His connection to Schönau is brought to life at Leutzendorf Villa, which Strauß used as a summer residence for 14 years. Among other works, he wrote the operettas “A Night in Venice” (1883) and “The Gypsy Baron” (1885) there. The museum’s themes therefore range from local everyday history to a specific chapter in Strauß’s life and the works he composed at the villa. Schönau an der Triesting parish church is another point of architectural interest; it was built in the Baroque style.
Schlosspark and Temple of the Night
Schönau Schlosspark covers around 30 hectares of waterways, expansive meadows and dense forests, with centuries-old trees rising above them. In Austria, it is included on the list of 56 gardens deserving special protection under Section 1 of the Austrian Monument Protection Act. Day visitors can explore the park on a guided tour; check whether a tour is available before your visit. Guided tours follow an underground path through the Schlosspark to the Temple of the Night and into the underground grotto. Built at the end of the 18th century, the temple is a garden grotto with a largely underground labyrinth.
Nature reserve and trails
The Schönauer Teich is located near Schönau an der Triesting and has been a protected area since 1979. It is one of the species-richest breeding sites for waterbirds in Lower Austria. For a different nature experience, try the Dornauerrunde: an easy hike starting at Karl Gruber Platz, covering 6.43 km and taking about 1 hour and 33 minutes. Its starting point, distance and approximate duration give you a clear idea of how to fit the loop into your day.
The cycle routes differ in what they offer. The Triestingau Cycle Path follows fully paved, flat routes along the Triesting and through a natural floodplain. As local detours may occur, check the current route before setting off. A route brochure from November 2022 describes the Triesting-Gölsental Cycle Path as a link between the Thermen Cycle Path and the Traisental Cycle Path. While the Triestingau Cycle Path focuses on the route surface and river landscape, the Triesting-Gölsental Cycle Path is defined by its connection between the two named cycle paths.
Technology and individual activities
The Kunstmühle Dornau adds a technological point of interest alongside the museum and gardens. It houses oversized machines, a three-storey wooden silo and intertwined pipes for mixing different types of flour.
Circle-C-Lamaranch in Schönau an der Triesting plans individual llama hikes for visitors. It is a good idea to arrange this in advance if you would like to include the activity in your travel plans.
