Church history, small monuments, and trails through forests and countryside reveal different sides of Auersthal. In the town center and beyond, you’ll find a variety of architectural and natural highlights. Wunderberg Cellar Lane and events throughout the year are also among the things you can consider when choosing your destination.

Parish Church of St. Nicholas and Local History

The Parish Church of St. Nicholas has stood on a hill in the center of Auersthal for over 600 years. It was first built of dressed stone in the Gothic style between 1333 and 1338. Its history also includes a turning point: in 1489, the church was burned down under Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary. The people of Auersthal immediately rebuilt it.

Several chapters of its history meet at this site: its early Gothic construction, its destruction in the 15th century, and its swift rebuilding by local residents. For your visit, the church offers a distinctive landmark in the center of town; its elevated setting is as much a part of its character as its long history.

Small Monuments and the Wayside Shrine Trail

Auersthal still has 30 wayside shrines, small chapels, and crosses. The village renewal association restores and maintains these monuments rooted in local tradition. They have served different purposes: marking routes, being erected as expressions of prayer or gratitude for particular events, or commemorating wars, epidemics, severe weather, and tragic accidents. These small monuments are associated not only with visible structures but also with the occasions and memories behind them.

The small monuments along the Wayside Shrine Trail are best explored on foot or by bike. The St. Francis Way also passes through the municipality of Auersthal.

Chapel, Cellar Lane, and Countryside

Outside Auersthal, amid vineyards and fields, stands the Chapel of St. Margaret. It is an example of a modern chapel built of concrete. Together with the parish church, it highlights a clear contrast: the church stands on a hill in the center of town, while the chapel is outside town, among vineyards and fields.

You can explore the historic Wunderberg Cellar Lane on foot or by bicycle. There is one important condition for visiting the cellars: they are open only during events or guided tours. A walk along the cellar lane and access to the cellars are therefore not the same thing; plan to visit the interiors during an event or guided tour.

Walking trails also lead through the forest by the biotope in Auersthal. Behind the trees is a small pond. The forest paths and the pond are two distinctive features of this area. Equipment is also available at the Auersthal activity park.

Events in Auersthal

Many events take place in Auersthal throughout the year, including the Auersthal Kirtag fair and the autumn festival. During Advent at Wunderberg, the Advent trail organized by the Auersthal village renewal association features more than 30 open cellars decorated for Christmas.

Event dates may vary. If a festival or guided tour is important to your travel plans, check the relevant dates before your visit. This lets you plan your trip around a specific occasion without assuming that an event takes place regularly.

Choosing Auersthal as a Travel Destination

Different interests can guide your choice of destination: the parish church and small monuments offer points of connection with local history, while forest trails, the cellar lane, and the chapel highlight other features of the area. If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Auersthal, you can first consider which of these themes will shape your plans, then match your decision with your accommodation criteria.
