Obersulz: Church, Wachtberg and Cellar Lanes
Accommodation in Obersulz
Obersulz between Kapellenberg and the Sulzbach
Obersulz lies in gently rolling countryside at the foot of Kapellenberg and also in a sheltered hollow just beyond the source area of the Sulzbach. The two descriptions complement each other: Kapellenberg describes the village’s connection to the rise in the landscape, while the hollow locates it near the stream’s source. Obersulz can thus be understood through two distinct landscape features: the slope and the source area.
Church, column and memorial
Obersulz parish church was built between 1661 and 1667, replacing a much older church. Its history therefore encompasses both the 17th-century new building and its older predecessor. The approximately ten-metre-high Trinity Column marks another point in time: it was erected in 1714. Matthias Näperth, an innkeeper in Vienna who came from Obersulz, had it built after he and his family were spared from the plague. The two structures therefore have different historical significance: the church is notable for replacing an older church, while the column commemorates the personal reason for its construction.
Wachtberg lies east of Obersulz and was originally built as a defensive structure. Today, it is home to a war memorial chapel dedicated to those who fell in the two world wars. Unlike the church and the column, which can be understood through their construction history, Wachtberg is defined by its former function and present-day dedication.
Cellar lanes and visiting arrangements
Two cellar lanes in Obersulz lie close to one another: Ziegelg’stetten and Am Anger; Ziegelg’stetten is right next to Am Anger. Ziegelg’stetten cellar lane has around 40 cellars with hipped and gabled roofs. The approximate number conveys its size, while the two roof types describe specific architectural features. A hipped roof also slopes down at the gable ends; a gabled roof has the characteristic gables at the ends.
The cellars in Ziegelg’stetten cellar lane are open only during events or guided tours. Before your trip, therefore, check whether an event or guided tour is scheduled for your visit.
Hiking and regional products
Route 3 of the “tut gut” hiking trail in Sulz im Weinviertel offers a specific hiking option. It starts and ends at Gasthaus Schlegl in Obersulz. This shared starting and finishing point gives you a clear reference for planning. If you’d like hiking to be part of your stay, you can plan the route as a separate activity alongside the historic sites and cellar lanes.
At Winzerhof Pirkner, you can buy products directly on site from the farm shop. The winery is known for an excellent selection, including wine, Frizzante and grape juice. As sales arrangements and product availability may change, it’s a good idea to check what’s currently available before your visit.
When looking for a hotel in Obersulz, you can first decide what you’d like to focus on during your stay: Route 3 offers a hiking option, while the parish church, Trinity Column, Wachtberg and cellar lanes provide a cultural and historical focus.
