Zistersdorf offers several different points of interest for your stay: historic traces of the town’s fortifications, the Maria Moos pilgrimage church, vineyards on Steinberg and places to relax such as Moospark. This lets you decide in advance whether you are more interested in local history, the landscape or a place to unwind.

City Walls, Gates and the Town Ditch

Zistersdorf was entirely surrounded by a city wall. There was a town gate on both the western and eastern sides. Of the former gates, only the northern gate remains; it was built around 1782. Traces of the fortifications can also be seen in Naglergasse: the remains of the city wall are still intact along the street and overlook the former town ditch, now called Stadtgrabengasse.

The gate, the wall remains and the former ditch each offer different points of reference for the town’s history. The northern gate is the only surviving one of the former town gates, while the wall remains can be found continuously along Naglergasse. Today’s Stadtgrabengasse takes its name from the former ditch. Together, these features can be understood as parts of the former town fortifications.

Maria Moos and the Wine-Growing Landscape

Another historical landmark is the Maria Moos pilgrimage church, built by the Kuenringers in 1160. In comparison, this date is well before the northern town gate was built around 1782. Zistersdorf is therefore home to two historical landmarks dating from different periods: the church, built in 1160, and the surviving gate from a later period.

As for the landscape, Zistersdorf lies amid vineyards at the foot of Steinberg. Cellar lanes on the outskirts of or outside settlements are characteristic of the local landscape in the municipality of Zistersdorf. It is worth noting the difference in scale here: the vineyards on Steinberg describe Zistersdorf’s location, while the cellar lanes are a typical feature of the municipality’s local landscape. This helps distinguish the immediate surroundings from the character of the wider municipal area.

Moospark and the Forest Nature Trail

Moospark, also known as Ledererpark, was created around the adjacent Moosteich pond. It was designed as a leisure and adventure park for all ages. Both names refer to the same park; Moosteich pond is its specific landscape feature. So if you come across the names Moospark and Ledererpark while planning your trip, you do not need to treat them as two separate destinations.

The forest nature trail is on the outskirts of Zistersdorf, in the direction of Gaiselberg. Signposts point the way from the intersection of the bypass and GaiselbergerstraĂźe, near Schlossteich pond. The direction and the named intersection are therefore important for finding your way. Moospark and the forest nature trail also differ in their locations: the park is around Moosteich pond, while the trail is on the outskirts of town in the direction of Gaiselberg.

When deciding whether to visit Zistersdorf, you can weigh up your interests based on these differences: the city walls and pilgrimage church are historical landmarks, while Steinberg and the cellar lanes represent the landscape and local character. Moospark and the forest nature trail, in turn, offer two different ways to enjoy the outdoors. This can help you decide whether to focus your stay on local history, the wine-growing landscape or the leisure spots mentioned above.
