If you are planning a stay in Roseldorf, you can choose from several cultural and historical highlights and a specific cycling route. Sandberg is the focus of Celtic history and archaeological finds; in the village, you can also visit the church and the mill monument. The cellar lane lies north of the village, while a walking and cycling path connects to the regional “Riesling” cycling route.

Celtic History on Sandberg

Sandberg, located between Roseldorf and Platt, is around 340 metres high. More than 2,000 years ago, it was an important centre of Celtic culture and became home to the largest known Celtic central settlement in Austria. Coin finds from Roseldorf point to trade links with the Rhineland, Bavaria, the area around Prague and the Pannonian-Hungarian region. The historical perspective thus extends from the settlement on Sandberg to connections with several distant regions.

The Celtic Tower on Sandberg in Roseldorf is an observation tower offering views across the Schmidatal, the Retzer Land and the Pulkautal. If you are interested in the connection between cultural history and landscape, you will find both an archaeological perspective and a viewpoint overlooking three landscape regions here.

The Zöchmann Reinhard winery at Roseldorf 29 houses an exhibition room. It provides an overview of the excavations of the Celtic settlement on Sandberg between Roseldorf and Platt, as well as the findings derived from them. In addition to the historic settlement site, research into its excavations is therefore also a topic in Roseldorf.

Church and Mill Monument

The completed church in Roseldorf was consecrated as early as 1280. The Federal Monuments Authority’s list of monuments dated 23 June 2026 includes the Catholic parish church of the Nativity of Mary in Roseldorf and the Sandberg archaeological site near Roseldorf as protected monuments. The parish church was placed under protection by official notice pursuant to Section 3; the archaeological site is also protected by official notice.

The mill monument combines the form of the sculptures with a local story: for the three sculptures, Stroj used a waterwheel, a gear wheel and a lantern (a lantern gear) as his inspiration. They were installed along the millstream in Roseldorf, which no longer exists. As visitors walk from one station to the next, an imaginary reconstruction of the entire mechanism takes shape in their minds.

Cellar Lane and Cycling Route

Roseldorf’s cellar lane lies north of the village and runs along a hill. It includes the Zöchmeister winery’s wine tavern and a self-service stop for spritzers. As the availability of these visitor facilities may change, please check before your visit whether both will be available during your stay.

The walking and cycling path in Roseldorf is around 370 metres long. It starts at the western entrance to the village, at the turn-off towards Sitzendorf an der Schmida, and runs south of the B 2 state road as far as the junction with the L 1146. The regional “Riesling” cycling route connects directly to this path. The roughly 370-metre distance refers to the local section of the path, not to the entire regional cycling route. When planning, you can therefore treat the Roseldorf section and the connected route as two separate stretches.
