Hiking and scenery

Kleinzell lies in the foothills of the Austrian Alps in Lower Austria, at an elevation of 470 m. Flowering meadows, alpine pastures and forests shape the natural landscape; natural highlights include crystal-clear mountain streams and the invigorating scent of the forest. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors will find both a specifically named summit hike and other leisure activities.

One hike leads from Kleinzell via Weißenbachalm, Zeißlalm and Kleinzeller Hinteralm to the summit of Reisalpe. It takes around three hours. As conditions can affect walking time, use this estimate as a general guide when planning. The route passes the named alpine pastures in sequence before reaching the summit. Visitors can also buy or earn a hiking badge in Kleinzell.

Ebenwaldhöhe and the hut

Ebenwaldhütte is located on Ebenwaldhöhe at an elevation of 1,046 m, in the heart of the scenic hiking and touring area of the Gutenstein Alps. From Kleinzell, an asphalt road leads towards Ebenwald; after 7 km, it reaches a large car park. From there, it is around a 15-minute walk to the hut. For planning your time, keep the two stages separate: the seven kilometres refer to the road journey to the car park, while the 15 minutes refer to the walk from the car park to the hut.

Riesenknödel are among the culinary highlights at Ebenwaldhütte; availability on the menu may vary. If you would like to try them, check the current menu in advance.

Leisure activities and season

Kleinzell has a 9 km cross-country ski trail, described as snow-reliable. Snow conditions and seasonal operation vary, so check conditions for your planned dates. The Ebenwald panoramic trail is also a sports facility in Kleinzell, and its seasonal operation may vary. A bicycle rental service and a mini-golf course add to the leisure options. Confirm their current availability before travelling.

The Kalte Kuchl natural swimming pond is a swimming pond in Kleinzell. Opening and swimming conditions may vary; check these details before your visit. The Salzerbad Health Resort has an indoor pool and a sauna. Access to both facilities may depend on the resort's rules. If you plan to use them, ask about visitor access in advance.

Churches and local history

Kleinzell's parish church became an independent parish church in 1330 and is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The original rib vault is still preserved in the chancel. The term refers to a vault whose surface is divided by intersecting ribs; in Kleinzell, the original structure has been preserved in the chancel.

A flight of 56 steps leads uphill from the village square to the small hilltop church. This also clearly describes the route from the centre of the village to this religious landmark: the village square is the starting point, and the hilltop church is the destination.
