If you are looking for a hotel in Aggsbach Dorf, you can plan your trip around the themes that shape the town: monastic history, historic blacksmithing, geology and hiking. Aggsbach Charterhouse was founded in 1380; the hammer mill recalls toolmaking in the 16th century, while the Geozentrum (geocentre) displays minerals, rocks and fossils on two floors. There are also different points of reference for the trails: one path leads through the town, and one stage of the Dunkelsteinerwald Circuit runs from Maria Langegg to Aggsbach-Dorf.

Monastic history at Aggsbach Charterhouse

Aggsbach Charterhouse is a former Carthusian monastery, founded in 1380 by Heidenreich von Maissau. Its meditation garden uses “green architecture” to make the former large cloister and the hermit houses with their seven cells visible again. The founding year places the charterhouse in its historical context; the garden makes it possible to understand the layout of the former parts of the monastery. Guided tours of the museum and church are available by prior appointment; bear this requirement in mind when planning a tour.

Historic crafts and geology

The Aggsbach-Dorf hammer mill was the former tool forge of Aggsbach Charterhouse and dates back to the 16th century. Three overshot waterwheels power the hammer, bellows and grinding system. This makes the forge more than a historic workplace: the waterwheels supply power to several machines, each with a different function. In contrast to the charterhouse, the focus here is on the technical side of local history.

The Steinstadel Geozentrum focuses on geology. It is housed in a centuries-old, listed natural-stone building; minerals, rocks and fossils are displayed on two floors. The geocentre thus brings together two aspects: natural history exhibits and the building history of a centuries-old natural-stone structure. The distinction is clear when choosing cultural topics: the hammer mill presents historic technology, while the geocentre brings together natural history exhibits.

Hiking trails and landscape

The NSWW (Nebelstein on the border with the Czech Republic – Eibiswald in southern Styria) runs directly through Aggsbach-Dorf; check the signs on site. The fourth stage (DUR 4) of the Dunkelsteinerwald Circuit runs from Maria Langegg to Aggsbach-Dorf. The routes therefore differ in how they are navigated: the NSWW runs through the town, while Maria Langegg and Aggsbach-Dorf are the endpoints of the DUR 4 stage. In addition, the Aggsbach, from which Aggsbach Dorf takes its name, provides one of the few points of access to the Dunkelsteinerwald from the Danube side.
