Mank brings together several themes that you can consider separately when planning a stay: the SoleAerium near the town center, the local history museum in the Pecherhaus, the Church of the Assumption of Mary and the Manker Pilgrims’ Way. Cultural history, a specific brine facility and the route’s connection to the landscape each offer a different focus. You can decide whether you would like to discover Mank mainly through its museum and church, through the SoleAerium or as the destination of the Pilgrims’ Way.

SoleAerium near the town center park

The SoleAerium is very close to the town center and is set in a spacious park. Its principle is straightforward: salt water drips over bundles of fir branches, releasing essential oils (aerosols) into the air. This process explains what makes the facility distinctive. Both the process and the location are relevant when considering it as part of your stay: this is a brine facility in a park near the center, while the museum and church primarily convey architectural and cultural history. This makes it easy to distinguish the different focuses of Mank’s attractions.

Local history museum in the Pecherhaus

The local history museum is housed in the Pecherhaus, built in the Art Nouveau style in 1913/14. The museum’s ground floor contains a small cinema museum; the collection currently comprises around 1,700 exhibits. The Pecherhaus gives the museum an architectural setting rooted in the Art Nouveau style, while the cinema museum is a distinct, clearly identified section on the ground floor. The approximate number also conveys the collection’s scale. In terms of what it offers, the local history museum is quite different from the SoleAerium: here, the focus is on the museum and its collection, while the SoleAerium is about the brine facility and its park setting. Its historical period also differs from that of the older parish church.

Church of the Assumption of Mary: architecture and furnishings

The Church of the Assumption of Mary is a Late Gothic hall church with stepped aisles dating from the early 16th century, with a Baroque exterior. The description distinguishes between its architectural form and exterior design: the church is Late Gothic, while its exterior was given a Baroque appearance. It also features Stations of the Cross dating from the 17th century and furnishings from around 1730. The church’s architecture, Stations of the Cross and furnishings therefore belong to different periods. This makes the church a distinct cultural and historical focus alongside the Pecherhaus. The latter’s Art Nouveau building dates from 1913/14, a considerably later period. If you would like to compare historic architectural styles, Mank offers both a building from the early 20th century and a Late Gothic church with later furnishings and a Baroque exterior for comparison.

The Manker Pilgrims’ Way and the Alpine Foothills

The Manker Pilgrims’ Way runs from the center of St. Pölten to Mank, mainly along field paths. Along many stretches, you can see the Ötscher and the impressive mountain panorama of the Alpine Foothills. The route offers a different perspective on Mank from its individual cultural attractions: it has a named starting point in St. Pölten, leads to Mank and is characterized by its predominantly field-path route and the scenery along many sections. The route is therefore a distinct travel option alongside the museum, church and SoleAerium. If your plans are based more on the route and the views, different considerations take priority than if you are focusing on architectural and collection history. The views can be enjoyed along many stretches of the Pilgrims’ Way and offer a landscape dimension in addition to the destination itself.
