Trattenbach: Hiking, Wittgenstein and Local History
Accommodation in Trattenbach
Trattenbach offers several specific ways to plan your stay around your interests: hiking, exploring the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein, local history and seasonal activities at the Feistritzsattel. There is also a museum and a range of offerings centered on local freshwater fish. If you are looking for a hotel in Trattenbach, these different themes can help you structure your trip planning: the key question is whether you want to focus on hiking trails, a philosophically themed route, historic sites or activities at the saddle. The themes range from outdoor recreation to museums and regional fish cuisine.
Hiking trails with different themes
There are 15 official hiking trails in Trattenbach, marked with yellow arrows. Five Wanderplatz’l (hiking rest areas) provide orientation and a place to take a break. Their signs include overview maps, detailed route descriptions and QR codes linking to the tours on OutdoorActive. You can use the maps and route descriptions to plan your hike; it is a good idea to check the tour information before setting out.
The Wittgenstein Trail starts and ends at the Wittgenstein Museum Trattenbach. Quotations from the “Tractatus” along the route make it a philosophical hiking experience. The Forst & Jagd (Forest & Hunting) trail has a different focus: signs there provide information about forestry and hunting. The trails therefore have distinct themes: Wittgenstein and philosophy on one, forestry and hunting on the other.
Feistritzsattel: Cross-country skiing and walking trails after the snow melts
The ski and hiking area at the Feistritzsattel is in the municipality of Trattenbach, at an elevation of 1,100 to 1,300 meters, on the border between Lower Austria and Styria. The Wechsel panoramic trail is suitable for both classic cross-country skiing and skating. If you are planning to go cross-country skiing, you can choose according to your preferred technique. After the snow melts, the Feistritzsattel offers walking trails ranging from leisurely paths to longer hikes. This means there is a clear seasonal distinction when planning: in winter, the trail for two cross-country skiing techniques is the main attraction; afterwards, the options described range from leisurely walks to longer tours.
Wittgenstein and historic sites
The Wittgenstein Museum provides information about Ludwig Wittgenstein’s life and his connection to Trattenbach. The Wittgenstein documentation is housed in the so-called “Schachnerstüberl.” Wittgenstein first lived in this building, which was built in 1838 and is now a listed monument. This makes it possible to connect learning about his life with a specific place in Trattenbach.
The Catholic parish church of the Holy Trinity is also a listed monument. It was built in 1786 by order of Emperor Joseph II. Another historic memorial is the Red Cross, or Strobl Chapel: it commemorates the residents’ fierce fight against invading Turks, whose further advance was stopped. The church, chapel and Wittgenstein sites each offer a distinct perspective on local history.
Outside opening hours, visits to the Wittgenstein Museum can be arranged by prior appointment with the Trattenbach municipal office. Arrange your visit with the municipal office before you arrive.
Fishing and freshwater fish
Wechselforelle combines two natural ponds for fishing enthusiasts with a restaurant for anyone who enjoys local freshwater fish. The family-run business serves dishes including cured salmon trout with dill and pepper, as well as grilled rainbow trout fillet in a crispy coating with parsley potatoes and tartar sauce. These examples give you an idea of the fish dishes on offer; dishes and visiting options may change. Check in advance which offerings are currently available.
