Stössing: Hiking, Landscapes and Culture
Accommodation in Stössing
Stössing combines hiking trails with varied landscapes and cultural and historical attractions. When planning your trip, you can choose different focuses: a circular route with Stations of the Cross, scenic views and changing trail surfaces, or the church and other monuments in the municipality.
Circular Hiking Trails and Landscapes
The Small Stössing Circular Hiking Trail starts in the town centre by the municipal office. Along the way, it passes old Stations of the Cross that lead into the forest; the small cemetery of the former monastery that follows is also part of the trail. This loop therefore connects a starting point in the heart of town with religious stations and a cemetery.
The Large Stössing Circular Hiking Trail offers changing views of Stössing, Hegerberg, Schöpfl and Gföhlberg, as well as the valleys of the surrounding towns. Along the way are patches of forest, meadows and pastures. The trail surfaces also vary: the route follows forest paths and gravel roads, with sections on meadow paths and one stretch on a farm track. Along the way, you can discover the abandoned Ödhof above Stössing, the blueberry forest beyond Hochgschaid, the Vienna Woods sandstone flysch ravines in Kottinggrub, the orchards along Hochstraß and the service tree grove above the Gritschenberger farmstead.
The hiking tour from Stössing to Hegerberg is rated moderate. It is listed as 4.12 km long, taking 1:30 hours, with 352 metres of ascent and 43 metres of descent. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change. The summit cross on Hegerberg is at an elevation of 655 m. The mountain is a popular destination for hikers, cyclists, and car and motorbike drivers.
Buildings and Regional Culture
The parish church of St Aegidius in Stössing is a medieval church with Late Gothic and Baroque elements. Late Gothic features, including buttresses and pointed-arch windows, can be seen on the main choir. The high altar is adorned with statues of Saint Aegidius, Saint Wendelin and Saint Leonard.
There are also notable landmarks outside the church: the aqueduct in Au in Hochgschaid is a listed monument. Seven tabernacle wayside shrines designed by artist Inge Naske stand in the cemetery in the village of Hochstraß. The service tree was rediscovered as a cultural asset in the region around Stössing and is increasingly being introduced to a wider audience. The municipality also offers several opportunities for equestrian activities, including riding and carriage driving, as well as keeping horses.
