Traismauer combines Roman traces with a diverse cultural and leisure offering. You can tailor your stay to archaeological sites, exhibitions, signposted trails or relaxation by the Traisen. Wine and traditional Heuriger fare add to the excursion options. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: Would you mainly like to explore historic sites, spend time outdoors, or combine both?

Roman traces and culture

Beneath Traismauer parish church, the crypt contains visible remains of the walls of the former headquarters building, or principia, of the military camp. They bear witness to its repurposing in late antiquity. Traismauer Castle was formerly the Roman cavalry fort of Augustianis. The seasonal exhibition “Traismaurer Treasures” displays finds from the Roman era and is open from May to September. The castle thus brings together its former use as a cavalry fort and archaeological finds, while the crypt adds visible remains of walls to the picture.

The Traismauer Nativity Play has been associated with Advent for more than 200 years. The Fine Art Gallery offers a different cultural focus: it is housed in a listed complex with an inner courtyard and garden courtyard at Wiener StraĂźe 10. The complex dates back to the 15th century. The gallery presents photography, painting, graphic art, music and literature; its programme may change. Before visiting specifically for the gallery, check what is currently on offer.

The “Weapons and Archaeology” exhibition is currently on display in the Hungerturm. Check before your visit to see whether it is still running. Exhibitions by guest artists at the “Altes Schlosserhaus” change every six weeks. Demonstrations are held in the old smithy on specified dates; you can also try your hand at forging. If this hands-on side of traditional craftsmanship interests you, plan your visit for one of the designated dates.

Walking and cycling routes

The Wechtl Circular Hiking Trail starts directly at Traismauer railway station and passes through vineyards and fields, then continues along a sunken lane into a mixed forest. This easy, well-marked trail goes over the Venusberg and past the mountain chapel to Reutbühel. The “Talking Romans” cultural trail offers a different focus: the approximately 4 km route passes through the town centre to the Danube Promenade. You can explore it on foot or by bicycle; it is signposted and can be followed in either direction. This gives you a choice between a circular walk through varied landscapes and a culture-focused route with named endpoints.

For a longer bike tour, the Traisental Cycle Path runs from Traismauer through the Traisental-Danube region via St. Pölten, Lilienfeld and St. Aegyd am Neuwalde to Mariazell. It is a family and pilgrimage cycle route. All S-Bahn trains on the route from St. Pölten via Herzogenburg, Traismauer and Tulln to Vienna Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof have ten bicycle spaces. As train services and bicycle capacity may change, check the latest information before your journey.

Relax by the Traisen and enjoy the vineyards

The Traismauer flood protection area borders directly on the town centre and is a local recreation area. At the bends in the Traisen, you can go for a walk and cool your feet in the water. For activities on the water, BOAT ADVENTURE at Traismauer Marina offers water skiing, banana boat, sofa and tube rides, as well as boat rentals. As the provider’s availability may change, check its current offerings if you plan to take part in one of these activities.

A picnic in the vineyard is another way to combine time outdoors with regional treats: among the vines, you can enjoy a traditional Heuriger snack and wine. Participating wineries and packages may change, so check the details in advance. Whether you plan your stay around Roman history and exhibitions, a hiking or cycling route, relaxation by the river or a picnic, Traismauer offers a range of specific places and activities to get you started.
