Two different types of tours are worth considering for a stay in Zagging: the Wind Turbine Walking Trail and the Fladnitztal Cycling Route. One is a circular walking trail, the other a longer cycling loop. If you are looking for hotels in Zagging, distinguishing between them can help you decide what you want to focus on during your stay: walking, a stroll through a cellar lane or cycling.

The Wind Turbine Walking Trail

The Wind Turbine Walking Trail is a 7.5-kilometre circular walking trail through gently rolling terrain between the Fladnitztal and Traisental valleys. Zagging’s cellar lane lies along the route. The trail is suitable for trekking bikes and mountain bikes; most of it follows paved gravel paths, with some sections on paved roads. As trail surfaces can change following maintenance work, check conditions before setting out.

The Fladnitztal Cycling Route

The Fladnitztal Cycling Route is about 30 kilometres long and is laid out as a cycling loop between the Traisental and Dunkelsteinerwald. It passes through the municipality of Obritzberg-Rust; along the Fladnitz stream, it runs through the wine-growing village of Zagging towards Statzendorf. The route is suitable for trekking bikes and city bikes. It follows state and municipal roads in some sections and paved farm tracks in others.

The common ground for choosing a bike is clear: trekking bikes are suitable for both routes. Mountain bikes are suitable for the Wind Turbine Walking Trail, while city bikes are suitable for the Fladnitztal Cycling Route. The surfaces also differ: the Wind Turbine Walking Trail is mostly on paved gravel paths, with some asphalt, while the Fladnitztal Cycling Route follows roads and paved farm tracks. This makes it possible to take both bike type and road surface into account when planning your tours.

Cellar Lane and Chapel

Zagging’s cellar lane is suitable for easy walks with the whole family. Since the Wind Turbine Walking Trail passes through the lane, it is also part of the loop. Access to businesses in cellar lanes can vary seasonally; if you are planning a visit, check access in advance.

Zagging Chapel adds an architectural destination to the tours. It is a timber-frame building on the east side of Landesstraße 100, also known as Römerstraße, at Ziegelofen 1, and is one of the attractions in the market municipality of Obritzberg-Rust. A timber-frame building is constructed around a load-bearing wooden frame, giving the chapel a distinct architectural character.

Views and directions

When weather and visibility conditions are suitable, the Wind Turbine Walking Trail offers views of the Traisental valley and Herzogenburg, as well as as far as the Danube and the Wagram region. Parking is available directly beside a wind turbine at the trail’s information point. Check the parking situation when you arrive.

The two routes also differ in their geographical features: the Wind Turbine Walking Trail lies between the Fladnitztal and Traisental valleys and offers the possible distant views described above. The Fladnitztal Cycling Route follows the Fladnitz stream through Zagging and heads towards Statzendorf; its longer loop runs between the Traisental and Dunkelsteinerwald. When planning, you can therefore choose between a circular walking trail with possible far-reaching views and a longer cycling tour along the stream.
