Lassing: Discover the Hochkar and its history
Accommodation in Lassing
If you are looking for a hotel in Lassing, you can organize your travel plans around two main themes: the Hochkar and the historical connections to the parish and Mendling. At the Hochkar, the circular trail, ski area, cave and route with several named places also differ in their features and conditions.
Lassing and its connection to the Hochkar
The Hochkar Alpine Road, around nine kilometers long, connects the B 25 in Lassing with the Hochkar recreation and ski area. This provides a direct link between Lassing and the Hochkar for your travel planning.
The parish’s history also leads to Mendling: in 1786, the imperial-royal toll collector Ferdinand Neubauer from Mendling submitted a petition in Lassing for the construction of a church and the appointment of a pastor. The name of the parish, “MENDLING ZU LASSING” (“Mendling in Lassing”), reflects the predominant influence of the Salt Office. It had a toll station in Mendling with a toll collector, a gatekeeper and an inspector.
Timber rafting in the Mendling Valley
The Mendling Valley experience area has a functioning timber rafting system. This adds another topic to your travel planning, alongside the history of the parish and toll station.
Skytour, ski area and cave at the Hochkar
The Hochkar 360° Skytour includes a 900-meter-long circular trail, which can be reached easily by lift. It operates seasonally from May to October. The route crosses a 60-meter-long suspension bridge, which is home to Lower Austria’s highest viewing platform, at an elevation of 1,700 meters. The three measurements refer to different things: the length of the circular trail, the length of the bridge and the platform’s elevation. Check the specific operating times before your trip if you plan to make your visit dependent on the Skytour.
The Hochkar ski area lies at an elevation of 1,380 to 1,800 meters and offers 19 kilometers of slopes. Slope availability and seasonal operations may change. So if skiing is a key factor in your trip, take current availability into account when planning. As another point of reference for elevation, the Hochkar Bergbahnen 4-person chairlift reaches an elevation of 1,770 meters. Its operations depend on the weather and season.
The Hochkar Cave is one of the largest caves in Lower Austria. Visits are limited to guided tours; access may change seasonally. Check in advance whether a guided tour is available during your planned travel dates. This distinguishes the cave from the Skytour and ski area: here, a guided tour is a condition of visiting.
Understanding the Hochkar route
The Hochkar route leads from Göstling via Lassing and the Hochkar Alpine Road to the Hochkar valley floor and the Geischlägerhaus. The return route passes through the Hochkar valley floor, Lassing and Göstling. The route is closed for winter from November 1 to April 14. The sequence of places answers a different planning question than the 900-meter-long Skytour: it names several points along the route, while the Skytour is described as a circular trail. Bear the winter closure in mind if you are planning to take the route during your trip.
