Schliefau: Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Schliefau
Schliefau can be explored through hiking trails with different destinations and its local history. The Taborweg leads to the Tabor, the short Tut-Gut-Weg Hochkogelberg is a circular route through alpine meadows, and the Mostweg leads to its highest viewpoint. The Dominikus Chapel and the events in the Schliefaugraben are also part of the town’s history.
Hiking Trails with Different Destinations
The family-friendly Taborweg hiking trail leads to the Tabor via a residential street. Schliefauhof (Eisenstraßenwirt), an inn and restaurant in Schliefau near Randegg, is along the way and welcomes visitors. Schliefauhof can be included in your tour plans as a place to stop for refreshments on the Taborweg. If you plan to eat there, check the restaurant’s current opening status before your trip.
The short Tut-Gut-Weg Hochkogelberg is a circular hiking trail through lush alpine meadows around Hochkogelberg. The starting point is PanoramastĂĽberl; the route passes the Sonnleiten Chapel. The circular route therefore features both a named structure and a landscape feature. It differs from the Taborweg not only in its destination but also in being a short circular route.
Old, gnarled cider pear trees shape the landscape along the Mostweg. Most of them were planted during the reign of Maria Theresa. The trail leads to its highest viewpoint, the Mostbrunnen on Denknöd Höhe. Both the trees and their historical planting period, as well as a specifically named viewpoint, are central to this route.
The routes can be distinguished by their features when choosing a trail: the Tabor and a place to stop along the way are the points of reference on the Taborweg; the short loop with its chapel and alpine meadows defines the Tut-Gut-Weg; and the Mostweg features cider pear trees and a viewpoint. This lets you choose between a named destination, a circular trail and a route with a distinctive connection to the landscape.
Trail conditions may vary seasonally. Access to the alpine meadows may also be affected on the Tut-Gut-Weg; the trail and viewpoint on the Mostweg may change seasonally. Take these conditions into account when planning your trip.
Local History and Heritage Protection
The Dominikus Chapel in Schliefau is protected as a historic monument under a decision pursuant to Section 3. This formal status is a distinct aspect of local history, alongside the hiking trails and landscape. If you are interested in cultural topics, the chapel offers another point of reference for learning about Schliefau.
The grave crime committed in the so-called Schliefaugraben is also part of the town’s history. On April 15, 1945, SS members murdered Hungarian Jewish forced laborers there, including 46 children. This is a distinct and grave chapter in the town’s history, separate from the leisure activities involving hiking trails and places to stop for refreshments.
