Discover Wieselburg’s history and trails
Accommodation in Wieselburg
Wieselburg: history and outdoor activities
Wieselburg can be explored through a range of interests: a historic building and an archaeological collection offer cultural highlights, while trails, open spaces and water facilities draw you outdoors. When planning a stay, you can explore these highlights separately or combine them. There are some practical starting points for planning: a hike with an approximate walking time, a starting point for the Kleine Erlauftal Cycle Route, and facilities for exercise and water activities.
Historical highlights
The Ottonian Octagon in Wieselburg is one of the oldest buildings dating from the Babenberg era. The Museum of Prehistory and Early History offers a different historical focus: it houses finds dating from the Early Neolithic to the end of the Early Middle Ages. This brings together a single building and a collection spanning a broad period. If you want to focus your trip on history, you can choose between architecture and the broad chronological scope of archaeology.
The Wieselburg Folk Festival was first held in Wieselburg in 1928. This date adds a link to the history of local events to the historical highlights.
Hiking and cycling
The Pfaffenberg Loop starts at the winemaking building on Zwiesel Square and is approximately 12 kilometres long. The walk takes around three hours. The distance and approximate walking time give you a practical framework for fitting the hike into your day.
Another starting point is the newly redesigned Zwiesel, with places to sit and relax. The Kleine Erlauftal Cycle Route starts there. From Wieselburg, you can explore the Kleine Erlauf over 35 kilometres. Along the Kleine Erlauftal Cycle Route, heading south, you’ll find recurring views of the Mostviertel mountain landscape. As route conditions may change, check the latest conditions before setting out.
Open spaces and water activities
The Lions Club Trail is a combined walking and cycling path connecting the town forest with the existing cycle path. At the Erlauf Promenade, the activity park features an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area, a bouldering wall and an open-air classroom with granite blocks. This gives you a range of activities and a dedicated place for outdoor lessons.
The area around the town forest and the activity park in the Au includes a wildflower meadow, marshland, and groups of trees and shrubs. These areas are intended to provide recreation for people and habitat for animals. The Wieselburg Badewelt, which uses Grander water, includes a sports pool, a children’s adventure area, a diving pool, a lazy river and an adventure slide. Its water facilities offer a distinct focus alongside the trails and outdoor amenities.
Weinzierl Castle in Weinzierl
Weinzierl Castle is located in Weinzierl near Wieselburg. This late-Baroque, four-wing complex dates primarily from the early 18th century. In contrast to the Ottonian Octagon, it offers a different architectural point of reference: late Baroque rather than the Babenberg era. A guided tour provides more information about the castle garden; advance booking with the director’s office is required.
