Altenwörth combines cycling routes along the Danube with floodplain scenery, local history and waterside activities. Several routes pass through the village or start here, including paths with different walking and cycling times. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you want to focus on a longer bike tour, a walk by the Old Danube arm or historic local details.

Cycling around Altenwörth

The sixth stage of the Danube Cycle Path along the north bank, from Krems to Tulln, passes through Altenwörth. Near Altenwörth, cyclists switch riverbanks because of the Danube power plant. The family-friendly Traisen-Danube Cycle Route is a branch of the Traisental Cycle Path: it runs via Sitzenberg-Reidling to the Danube Cycle Path at Altenwörth.

The Wagram Trail is an approximately 18-kilometre connecting route between the Weinviertel Trail and the Danube Cycle Path. In the Kirchberg area, it runs from Altenwörth via Gigging, Neustift, Kirchberg and Engelmannsbrunn to Fels, where it meets the Weinviertel Trail. Another route starts in Altenwörth: the Kamptal Cycle Path runs from here to Zwettl. This gives you a choice of routes with different courses and destinations, rather than routes that all share the same character.

On foot and by the Old Danube arm

The Biberweg is seven kilometres long, with a stated walking time of about an hour and a half. The Donau-Kamp Loop is a 26-kilometre cycling or hiking route from Altenwörth along the Danube. The stated times for the loop are an hour and a half by bike and six and a half hours on foot. If you compare the two routes by time, the Biberweg’s roughly one-and-a-half-hour walk is considerably shorter than the stated walking time for the loop.

The Old Danube arm lies in the species-rich Danube floodplains, on the edge of the floodplain forest. There have been two bathing jetties there since spring 2004; check their condition on site before swimming. The Danube Tour leads to Altenwörth and recommends a detour via the old river arm to the Danube and the Altenwörth Danube power plant. There is also a wakeboard lift operated by the YES Surf Club Altenwörth at the Altenwörth gravel pit on Kollersdorferdorferstraße. Check the current operating conditions before making specific plans.

Village character and history

The village’s main street is characterised by predominantly single-storey cross-wing farmhouses and street-front houses; some façades feature styles from around 1900. House no. 6 is a single-storey building with a mansard hip roof. Its commemorative plaque for Emperor Franz Joseph bears the year 1908. A sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, dated 1715, stands in the church square.

The parish church is dedicated to Saint Andrew and is a Josephinian hall church. It was probably first mentioned in a document as early as 865. The parish’s history is closely linked to the Danube: frequent flooding led to its relocation to Kirchberg am Wagram in 1147, and it was re-established in Altenwörth in 1784. The Nostalgia Trail adds to these historic local details with twelve information boards about life on the Danube, its dangers and the economic opportunities it has offered over the course of history.

Wine tasting in the village

At Weingut Waltner, wine tastings are available on Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon without an appointment. Dates are listed through December 23, 2026. If you are travelling later, check the hours before your visit.
