Großriedenthal is located in the Wagram wine-growing region and combines a landscape shaped by viticulture and loess with striking viewpoints, hiking and cycling routes, and historic sights. When deciding whether the town is right for your stay, two key aspects are especially helpful: you can experience the landscape on its routes, while the church, museum and underground passages offer a glimpse into the town’s history. This lets you plan your trip around whether you are most interested in the wine landscape, outdoor activities or cultural heritage.

Wine, Loess and Landscape

Großriedenthal is part of the renowned Wagram wine-growing region. The mild climate and loess soil produce a range of wine styles: light, fruity wines as well as full-bodied, very high-quality wines. The landscape is also part of this appeal: the “Kellergassen Tour” leads through terraced vineyards around Großriedenthal. Those who want to discover the wine region through its landscape will find a tangible connection to cycling as well as to its distinctive wines.

Another special feature is the “Neun Mauna” loess wall, made up of loess formations up to 25 metres high and designated a natural monument in 1979. This makes it possible to understand the landscape not only through viticulture but also through its geology. The loess formation is also a stop on the “Kellergassen Tour.”

Views and Walking Routes

The Eisen.Hut viewing platform stands on the Eisenhut vineyard, one of the highest points on the Wagram. It can be reached via well-marked hiking and cycling routes such as the “Tut-Gut-Weg.” From the platform, the panoramic view extends across the vineyards and the Tullnerfeld to the Danube. Eisen.Hut is therefore a specific viewpoint, while walks through the quiet vineyards and picturesque loess ravines bring the experience of walking through the landscape to the fore. Along the way, there are opportunities to observe unusual plants and grasses.

One hiking option described in detail is the “Tut gut!” Großriedenthal hiking trail, Route 2. It leads from the Reithergraben via Diebsnest and Eisenhut, downhill towards Steingrube and onward via Goldberg. The route then passes through the Wolfsgrube cellar lane and follows a sunken lane back to Großriedenthal Church. These named stops give the hike a clear sequence through the landscape.

Cycling Through the Vineyards

The “Kellergassen Tour” is a 38-kilometre hilly cycling route through the terraced vineyards around Großriedenthal. It passes the “Neun Mauna” loess formation. Visitors can therefore choose between different ways to explore: a described hiking trail with a sequence of waypoints, and a cycling route that takes in vineyards and the loess formation.

Church, Museum and Local History

The Museum of Simple Things is housed in a former knight’s manor. It was remodelled in the Renaissance style in the 16th century and later operated as a large farm. The museum displays historical objects from everyday rural life. Großriedenthal parish church is Roman Catholic and dedicated to Saint Lawrence; it was built between 1768 and 1771. There are also underground passages, or subterranean bunkers, on Großriedenthal’s local hill. Together, the museum, church and underground passages offer different points of connection to the town’s history and architectural heritage.
