Muggendorf: Myra Falls, Hiking Trails and Mountain Views
Accommodation in Muggendorf
Muggendorf offers a variety of places to visit during your stay: from Myra Falls and its cascades to hiking trails, viewpoints and historic sites. When planning, it is worth paying attention to the specific routes, time estimates and trail sections, as they differ considerably.
Myra Falls: Water, Bridges and a Raft Ride
Myra Falls has a total height of 125 metres. Every day, around 5,000 cubic metres of water cascade over rock steps into the depths. The site includes 26 bridges and 8 stairways. The Austrian Tourist Club maintains and inspects the infrastructure and keeps it in good repair. As site conditions may change, check the state of the paths and facilities before your visit. An adventure raft ride is available at Myra Pond in the Myra Falls Hiking & Water World; check in advance whether it will be operating during your visit.
Hiking Trails and Viewpoints
The Muggendorf Forest Nature Trail is a circular route about 2 kilometres long. Along the way, you will find more than 60 different tree and shrub species, as well as numerous information and direction boards. A circuit around Hausstein takes about 45 minutes and starts at the Karnerwirt inn. The blue-marked forest trail from Myra Falls to Jagasitz takes about an hour. These walking times refer to different routes and starting points. Check the trail markings and the forest trail’s approximate walking time on site.
Hausstein is a distinctive rocky peak. From its easily accessible side, you can reach a viewpoint with an unobstructed view as far as the northern cliffs of Schneeberg. From Jagasitz at Kreuth, the view extends across the entire foothills of the Alps, including Schneeberg and Rax. If you are interested in climbing, the 300-metre-wide south face of Hausstein offers the Direttissima route. Check climbing conditions and access on site.
Mountain Destinations with Different Trail Sections
Almesbrunnberg, at 1,079 metres, lies in the Gutenstein Alps within the municipality of Muggendorf. The ascent leads through Steinwandklamm gorge. Just below the summit, a large grassy saddle offers views of the Northern Limestone Alps from Schneeberg to Ötscher. A marked hiking trail from the former Jagasitz inn comes to within about 300 metres of the mountain. The final stretch to the summit follows an unmarked path, so take this change into account when planning your route.
Another destination is the Unterberg refuge at an elevation of 1,190 metres, about 150 metres below the summit of Unterberg. It is a destination for hikers, ski tourers and pilgrims on their way to Mariazell. From Muggendorf, the Enziansteig trail leads to the refuge in about three hours. The approximate walking time gives you a guide for planning, without equating the different mountain destinations.
Local History and Places to Eat
The Vinzenzi Chapel was completed in 2010 and dedicated to Saint Vincent of Valencia, the patron saint of woodcutters. The lime kiln in Muggendorf also points to a local historical connection: it is linked to the tradition of lime burning, documented by J. A. Schultes in 1802. Together, these two distinct themes complement the natural and hiking destinations: a chapel and its dedication, and the history of a local craft.
The Myrastubn inn is located right at the entrance to Myra Falls and serves regional, seasonal and traditional dishes. As restaurant operations and menus may vary, check the latest information before your arrival.
Getting There and Other Routes
Bus route 332 runs directly from the Pernitz/Muggendorf stop to Myra Falls; the journey takes about five minutes. Check the timetable before travelling. There is also a cycling route: a well-marked cycle path branches off in Pernitz and leads directly to Myra Falls. Markings may change, so it is worth checking the current route.
For a longer hike, an approximately 12-kilometre circular trail connects Pernitz, Muggendorf and Gutenstein. This gives you a choice between individual destinations with approximate walking times and a route through three towns. The best option depends on whether you are planning a shorter circuit, a specific viewpoint or a longer route connecting the towns.
